You can also change the RAW/Fx button to do something more useful - such as Optical Preview (or Exposure bracketing).

That , Andrew , will have to come later
Let the idiot actually manage to use the beastie first
At last I've got it set for RAW.
I used to be able to play more or less happily with the various menus on the K-x - this has really had me tearing out my hair for a bit.
Now I'd better get the Firmware up to date .
It takes us oldies about twice as long as the youngsters, doing things

WAHEY !!!!!
I've at last got it all set up and the Firmware update done [ yes I have checked that ]
Now I can get out tomorrow and play a little with it
I believe that the DA 18-55 WR has quick shift on it - is that so ?
If so that's the next thing to learn how to use

Umm... What is 'quick shift' please?

QuckShift means manual focusing is possible when autofocus has been locked on. It enables fine adjustments to be made manually to the focus position.
I use it mainly with close up photography - I can keep the tripod in the same position and move a new object into the field of view. I use AF, hold it with a half press on the shutter release and change the point of focus if I want a different part of the subject to be focused upon. It's quicker than using manual focus only as AF doesn't need to be switched off for the odd correction.

Laura. You do not have to go outdoors to use your camera. There are many interesting objects in the house.
Try oil on water. Try flowers in a vase. Try coloured water in a container. Try using mirrors, even self portraits. Coloured smarties on a dark surface. Playing with light on cd's. Working with back light from a window. I could keep you busy all day.
They may not end up being masterpieces but it will give you time with that new camera of yours and gain familiarity.
When you get really old you will find that using the camera indoors is just as good fun as being out in the wind, wet and cold.
regards Thoramay.

Laura. Have just read an interesting article on photographing smoke using incense sticks. Needs photographing against a dark background.
I cannot link you to that site but I am sure that if you Google 'photographing smoke' you will find all the details how to.
Should keep you occupied.
regards Thoramay.

Next job is to put in a card and see what the Firmware is and update that .
However have hit a minor snag .
The K-30 has lots more buttons and bits than the K-x . I've been shooting permanently in RAW for some long time now [ possibly about 18 months ? ] and I can't see how to set that up as a permanent thing on the K-30 !
The K-30 has button on the Left hand side saying RAW/Fx
I can't see anything so far in the manual as regards a 'permanent RAW ' setting and I really need to start using this ASAP since I need to be pretty comfortable with it in time for going back to Dublin on the 18th
I've also got just under 200 pics from the last trip [ got back Tuesday evening ] to put through Aperture and once I'm happy, either burn to disk or put on a USB drive to take out with me.
Please would a K-30 owner give me the idiot type instructions for this to save my sanity ?
