I think an in-camera interval timer would be extremely useful.
Does anybody know of an add-on that would achieve this?

You could adapt a kit like this one:

www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ITAG=FAQ&ModuleNo=25224&doy=13m3#faq

although the longest interval is 60s with this. Playing around with resistor values may work though. :

Peter,
That's progress for you I can see that you need it, given that equipment list
The AF540 with an FG adaptor and lead straight into the AF540 on a hacked Pentax 4P bracket does me just fine
Matt
Matt, can you explain how you 'hacked' the bracket please? Is this the hot shoe grip?

We have a photo co-op here. There are five of us, all experienced photographers, and together we have quite an array of very good stuff:
two Beseler 4X5 enlargers, one Simmons/Omega B22XL, huge tub sink, and in the studio part all kinds of Novatron stuff, soft boxes, umbrellas, various pull-down backdrops, etc.

However, none of can figure out how to get my istDS to work with these studio flash systems, even with the Wein SoftSync. Otherwise, it's a fine camera, and I'm saving for the 10D.

My question is this: Will the 10D work with studio flash systems?

Peter,
The problem is that the 4P bracket was designed for 4 pins and uses a metal plate for the hotshoe. Doh!
The 5P foot of the AF540 shorts out and it reverts to non-digital mode.

I tried filing away part of the shoe-plate but that wasn't 100% successful. In the end, because of time pressures, I took a piece of 35mm negative, cut it to size and slide it on as an insulator for the hot shoe plate

I knew that film would come in useful one day!

Ted - that's very strange. AFAIK there are plenty of others using the *ist-D series with studio flash. The *ist-D even had a PC socket on the side. I do know that many use infrared triggers to fire the flash systems (which cuts down on problems with wires). But there should be no reason why an *ist-DS doesn't just trigger the flash....

Unless your *ist-DS is defective???
(Let others comment on the use of studio equipment first though )

IR Triggers are the answer to many of the problems with studio flash. Reliable, convenient and no wires to trip over.

Thanks Matt but I'm not sure we are talking about the same kit. I have a hot shoe grip which I'd rather like to use but all of the later flash manuals state not to use the new guns on older 3 pin kit. The hot shoe on top of the grip is all plastic too.

I had a similar problem with some tripod mount hotshoe adapters that also had a metal plate for the shoe. I did manage to file enough metal away that my AF360's work fine now. It's that 4th (most forward) pin that's the problem, or rather, is affected by the shoe.

Peter,
Seems like we are talking about different items...

I have one of these: http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/flashes/misc/grip.jpg
I use a 5P cable from the hot shoe of the camera to the 5P socket on the AF540.

It was the shorting of the pins that messed up the 5P cable link, so I insulated with film.

This grip is rather nice to work with - there's a little push clip that disconnects the grip from the plate in one go - so switching to portrait orientation is quick and easy (but requires two hands).

Yep, that's the one I have except the picture doesn't show the stainless stell clamp for fixing to the bracket.

I was after a slightly more technical solution so I've posted another thread as this is really OT.

I just can't get the thing apart to cut the connections to the shoe. I only want to use AF500FTZ, AF540FGZ flashes, I have no older ones left that I would ever use atop the grip.

just make it a 12/14 MP sensor and increase the in camera sharpening levels and I think this camera would blow anything else away on the market away including the canon 1Ds MarkII

Nooooooooooooo.. you can always sharpen up a soft image. The sharpening technique I use (but there are other ways of doing it) takes about a second, but I have the option not to if I want it a little soft.

Cheers

Pete,

I don't think you have learned anything.

Pete,

If more in-camera sharpening is what you really want, sell your Pentax kit, and buy Canon. This in-camera sharpening business has been explained to you many times, by many people. It ain't going in, is it?

Pentax users DON'T WANT IT, comprende?

If you are not getting enough sharpening in camera, then Pentax is not for you. That said, I remember you saying during your Canon v Pentax tests that you couldn't see much difference. So what's your problem?

Get used to it, or get rid. Just don't keep dragging the same old thing up here.
