Am I imagining things or is this camera just an ordinary K1000 that someone has stuck some leatherette onto the pentaprism?

It's one of the thousands (if not millions) of Hong Kong made K1000s, only difference is that someone stuck a bit of fabric to the top plate.

Be a bit careful about billing something as a special edition. You can safely say "Rare special edition metallic blue Spotmatic" but if you try to claim it's a factory paint job you might potentially end up in hot water. I can say my orange MES is a limited edition (as I have no intention of making another identical one)!

It'd be even better if mine actually worked, unfortunately it seems to have a problem whereby the shutter refuses to cock on the first wind after a few days. The second and subsequent windings-on behave perfectly, so I might try dribbling a bit of lighter fluid in to see whether that frees things up a bit.

I'm pretty sure I've seen that on ebay before. Maybe it was returned, or they just knocked up another one! Definitely not done by Pentax. One of those panels looks a bit wonky to me.

My extra special, very limited special edition, top secret military issue, black K1000, will be going on ebay, tomorrow.
No man is worth his salt, who has not been banned from at least one Forum, and two Flickr groups.

Trading Standards need to pay them a visit.
This is the only SE made of the K1000 and it's stamped on the camera.

Just had a closer look, the back door is a little unusual - it seems to have "Made in Japan" etched on a metal plate. That said, this still just looks like a second batch K1000 with some fabric glued on.

Sad to say, I don't think Trading Standards would be interested or able to do anything. They aren't making any false claims there, I could legally describe my orange ME Super as a "Special Limited Edition" providing I didn't try to claim that it was a genuine Pentax factory version. It's special and it's limited in that I have no intention of making another identical one and it's not a standard example. I'd imagine K1000s with fabric glued to the top plate probably are rare, as most people didn't stick things to their K1000!

K1000 prices in general strike me as ridiculous, certainly BIN ones. I regularly see MXs go for about the same prices, the MX is a much nicer camera to use with an informative viewfinder, self timer, DOF preview and the options to add motor winders, databacks, different focussing screens, etc.

Same here. I could do with a couple of K series 52mm lens caps but I'm not haggling with someone who thinks £12 is a fair price for a lens cap. Try £5 and we might be able to do a deal!

The cameras probably one of the original K1000's (first batch?) it has AOC and Asahi on it which later ones didn't. Some people claim that the first two years of K1000 production was in Japan and then assembly moved to Hong Kong and lastly full manufacture to Cosina in China, although I always understood they were made at the same factory in China that made the Spotmatic 500. I could be wrong though I only know what I heard from other people.

Regarding Trading Standards he's selling it as "Item condition: Manufacturer refurbished" It's unlikely that it has been anywhere near Pentax? Also asking for £350????

I always thought that the first batch K1000s had the serial number stamped on the top plate (and picked out in black) and "Made in Japan" stamped into the rear of the top plate like the KM/KX/K2.

I know the AoCo logo hung on for a while as I have one which was definitely made in China (no made in Japan lettering anywhere), it's still all-metal and has the AoCo logo on the pentaprism.
