Cleaning a Pentax SV

Posted 24/11/2011 - 20:20 Link
Hello, I'm new here. I inherited a Pentax SV + Super Takumar 55mm 1.8 and would like advice about how to clean them up - for example, there is a little corrosion around the edge of the film door. I would prefer to try myself, rather than sending it off to a specialist at great expense.

Thanks in advance

Where abouts exactly is it? Is it on shiny black enamel, chrome or what?

0000 grade wire wool is good for removing slight rusting and other blemishes. (Obtainable from wood finishing suppliers and good hardware shops)

BEWARE it sheds fine metallic iron debris like no tomorrow so try not to get it where you dont want it and vacuum the area thoroughly after use.

The corrosion is on the lip of the black enamel door, which locates into a groove on the camera body. It looks as if there was once some kind of seal inside the groove to make the case light-tight - will I need to replace that too, and if so - how?

Thanks for your advice

Yes.

A search for 'light seal' on ebay will bring up several kits for just such jobs.

Mustn't forget the Zenits, or folders, or...
