Jessops in trouble?

I cashed in an old Comet voucher on their last day of trading so don't give up hope.

I was in my local jessops during the Xmas break, I wanted a monopod preferably a manfrotto. I was asked what's a monopod?

It seemed they had a cheap one in stock, but no manfrotto, despite their website showing they had them in stock. An utter shambles of a store that couldn't sell me anything I wanted for what must be over three years now due to no stock and repeatedly being told to order direct from the website, which if I'm going to do that then I will order by price alone.

There's no hint of store closures on the Jessops website; Comet showed the last day of trading for each of their stores.

Generally I'm saddened. The main Edinburgh store had a lot of good staff, many of whom had been around a long time. All that knowledge gone to waste.

On the point of vouchers and closures, the company is in Administration which means, in effect, PWC are running the company. They have an obligation to everyone who is owed money, which means customers, suppliers, the staff and the taxman.

They need to go through the accounts to see what the balance sheet looks like and who has to be paid first. Give them a few days before assuming that vouchers are lost.

I will miss them if they do go - whilst I have had good and bad experiences with Jessops the local staff are helpful here in Wrexham

I agree that Jessops as a company have obviously got it wrong I do feel sorry for the staff if they lose their jobs - it's hard enough getting a job at the momment and this won't help the overall situation either

Walsall closed today. Staff were unaware until they went in this morning.

On the local radio news this evening I heard that Jessops HAVE gone into administration !

It will be sad if they do go, there are a lot of jobs at stake and cameras are somthing that is benficial to try before you buy. No doubt people have been using Jesopps to try the camera before buying from the likes of Amazon for a while.

I agrre with 'smeggypants' the significant decine of compact sales and the shift to online sales are the likley the main factors.

Our local store had a good range of cameras and also stocked Pentax, they also had K30, K5, K01, Q and a small array of lenses. The staff where reasonably helpfull too.

Ive had £30 in Jessops vouchers from over a year (I won them) and every time I went in to get something or even looked on the website, what I wanted was more than £30 more than elsewhere! The San disk SD card for example was £40 and about £13 online. Would have saved me £3 while spending £30 of vouchers!

In hindsight should have just got some prints done.

I feel a great deal of sympathy for the staff of Jessops. The company themselves IMHO were a waste of space. Before the last clear out in Ipswich there were 2 stores within 50 yards of one another, can only be down to mismanagement. There was space in the larger one to accommodation the smaller store.

Give them a few days before assuming that vouchers are lost.[/quote]Administration is about legally protecting a company from its creditors, thus enabling it to be run as a going concern to give time to find an alternative to liquidation. The administrators are thus legally entitled to refuse customer refunds for faulty goods and to refuse to honour gift vouchers. Sometimes they are honoured, other times not. This is where credit (and some debit card) protection is useful. I would urge anyone to be aware of what protection is available always take advantage of it. Plastic gets bad press but used wisely it is very beneficial.

Customers come way down the pecking order. If card protection isn't available (and that is less likely for small amounts) then a claim needs to be made to the administrators. But that is way down the pecking order so I wouldn't hold out much hope. The people to be paid first by the administrators/receivers and liquidators are themselves. And very handsome their fees are too.

Sorry but that's wrong under the sale of goods act no company can refuse a refund for faulty goods, they can of course reject a refund for change of mind.

Obviously sale of goods can be slightly excluded if items are sold in a clearance sale and items are sold under having no warranty etc although they must still comply with the sale of goods act when it comes to item descriptions etc, as Jessops have not yet had a clearance sale and are only in administration then all contracts of sale will apply including the sale of goods act.
