I only use the 'New Posts' option. I have always assumed that this option will show me all new posts since the last time I chose 'New Posts', but it doesn't.
I believe the PU forum site software is causing members to miss posts. I would prefer to see an 'Unread Posts' option that does what it says on the tin and shows me only the posts that I have not already read.

It still would require a modification to fix the gallery (and weekly comp.) and get automated notifications or as you suggest the possibility to show up as a new/unread post. The lack of that is still a major pita. And I really don't understand why they don't solve it.I only use the 'New Posts' option. I'll guess it isn't high on their priority list.

If the gallery is not for C+C and merely to showcase your best photos why is a comments box included?

Sorry David....Don't ask me. Ask the ones who introduced that format.
But why should you put a comment box in, if no body gets notified about that comment.
So maybe it is only meant to provide room for that "unconditional pampering" that is going on there.... sometimes/often/never/ depending on your view
I can not think of an other reason to be honest....

Okay let me put my cards on the table. I'm a complete numpty when it comes to computers. Cameras I'm okay with but I can never be accused of being a nerd.
If someone makes it easier to upload into the Forum then I'll post my photos there for comment - and I'll probably start entering the fortnightly competitions.

Thinking a bit further. Why not change the gallery to something like the PPG. Put in your best shot, let the rest of the forum members take the trouble to vote Yes/No for a certain period, and create a real show case of the forums "finest".
Now........isn't that a scary idea. You actually have to say I like it or I don't or even worse.....submit your own work to such a stressful idea.
Martin.
PS, David , don't feel pressured into a situation by some of my remarks. They aren't aimed at you, personally.
And I'll be more than happy to guide you through the dreadful steps of hot linking. Even by PM if you like. Just say the word.

Thanks Martin, I'll probably take you up on that. I wasn't feeling pressured in any way just inadequate. I did try a couple of times to upload to the Forum and nothing happened. I like your idea of setting up a Finest Photos Forum.
david
PS. Further to my comment on the number of pictures one person can upload to the Gallery I think this devalues the Gallery. Although there are no limits imposed on PU members it would be so much better if everyone exercised a little more restraint.

I think David has a very valid point. If getting pictures onto the Forum was as easy as putting on the Gallery, there would be many more people using the Forum, including myself. I have tried but my computer skill and ability lets me down every time. Like golf, photography have those who like a challenge and compete and those who simply enjoy the process. The Gallery serves the purpose of those who enjoy the process and wish to share their efforts and the Forum meets the needs of those who wish to improve and learn. I do feel frustrated when I take the time to comment in the Gallery and ask questions and the poster is, apparently, not interested enough to respond.

You could post images in the Gallery and then tell us they are there in the forum, but it does end up duplicating effort.
Which do you prefer as a showcase for images - the gallery or the forum?

I love the gallery, but, as I've said in the past it must be for your best efforts. I tend to only look at 1 or 2 per page.
The comments notification is absolutely vital!
If people want a scrapbook or photo bucket then we should make a separate area for dropping any photos for critique or just easy uploading.

One man's best effort is possibly something someone else would pass over so you'll not get far trying to limit it in any qualitative way IMO of course.
I agree about the notification - it's frustrating not to be prompted to review comments.

I would consider it a priviledge to have the likes of Malo, John Riley or George comment on my efforts. I am sure I would learn a lot, but there is that but...getting them on the Forum. John..I think the Gallery and the Forum compliment each other. I also think that the Gallery would be much more useful if some of the comments in this thread were addressed, but I think it need to evolve and meet changing needs. Patience is the keyword here, I believe.

I have never understood why it is possible to post images to the gallery but not to the forum.
Both bandwidth and storage cost very little these days, but if the site owners are concerned on that score, why not have a limit - say 3 pictures a day?
That would allow you to post a couple of modifications to an original.
Come to think of it, a limit is not a bad idea. One reason I sometimes don't comment is because there are so many pictures posted - often six or ten by one person.

I always understood that the Gallery was for C+C as well as the Forum. A lot of people, me included, don't post in the Forum because its just not so accesible.
As for pictures dropping off the recent pages of the Gallery - that's down to some people uploading not just one or two of the pictures they think are worth sharing but loads of them. I counted 12 pictures in one day from one member not so long ago. I find this unfair on other members whose photos are pushed down the list before others have had a chance to view them.
david
Now....it has been very obvious the original idea has faded away and the simple fact that there is STILL NO automated notification tool implemented in the gallery (or weekly competition for that matter)should tell you enough. The gallery is not the place to ask for C&C.
If anyone would have my quota of allowed postings in the galley, just take it up with the people in charge. I happily give them away as a freebie.
