Firmware updates out

Its fine Mate, happens every time I update my FW, just click on "it installed correctle" of just red X it.

For some unknown reason, for me, it doesn't error on a second or subsequent run of the .exe. So try it again.

It`s a windows thing. Windows 8 chucks it right out but does give the option to overule.

So that's a relief. I went ahead and installed the update, ignoring the windows error message. All seemed to go fine, and the camera is reporting running at v_1.07 now

It's easiest to download the Win/Mac file as it's the BIN file instead of the EXE.

wow even an update for the MkI K5, bringing it up to 1.16

Well done Ricoh, still supporting the old and aging cameras in the range. Wouldn't get that from Canikon.

Hi, Just did my K5. Same error message. Works fine though.

They've done it to support the new 1.4 teleconvertor.

Unless you are planning on buying the teleconvertor it's rather pointless updating.

Oddly enough Nikon do support the older models with new firmware, I used it on the D7000 and D700 when the 800mm lens was launched.

As Smeggy says, it's probably for the converter but it's worth doing as sometimes there are small changes made to improve the firmware itself as making it run quicker or more efficiently.

There's no evidence of this.

I spent around 10 years working as a beta and alpha tester for software. Software updates CAN and often DO introduce bugs that weren't previously present.

The latest update is NOT "probably" for the teleconverter, it IS for the teleconverter. The release notes state this.

Unless you are planning to buy the new teleconvertor then there's no reason to install the latest firmware. "If it ain't broke don't fix it" - is very sensible advice to heed.


The infamous statement "Improved stability for general performance." is meaningless in terms of a real world change for the better. What it means is that they "may" or "may not" have changed some unspecified stuff that is just as equally liable to break something as to improve something.

"If it ain't broke don't fix it" - Over the years I've seen countless instances of people crying becuase they've updated for no other reason than to have the latest firmware number, only to find out it's broken something and they are worse off.

Normally this wouldn't be a problem as you can roll back, but for some odd reason you cannot roll back to earlier versions on Pentax cameras.

Don't be a lemming. You might get away with it a few times, but one day it will bite you in the arse and sharply

No, Smeggy is right. I was beta tester for Sony video editing software and wrote my own code too. It was usually three steps forward and two back.

My own weakness in the days when 32MB of memory cost more than £1,000 was to find a more efficient way of doing the same thing. Occasionally something would get lost by accident.

My K3 has been updated because I have the TC on order but my Blu-ray player is two years behind the times because I have not yet found a disc the current firmware won't play.

Smoggy pants, rather odd that the old Tamron 1x4 TC now works with all the lenses I have both Pentax and Sigma. The AF now works and from my tests it's bang on. The new firmware must be doing something, as prior to installing it, some lenses did not operate at all and the AF was hit and miss. Yes the focal length and F/ numbers are not displayed but the Tamron TC now works and is performing and providing the extra reach if and when I need it.

I am sure I will look into the new Pentax HD version at some point, but for now the new firmware has made me happy.

Can't imagine this was an accidental mutant of my Web Nickname - but respect for you coming up with an original variation.


OK the new firmware helps other teleconvertors as well as the new Pentax 1.4 model. great.


My comments still apply. I have 10 years of experience of testing alpha and beta software. I know from bitter experience that fixing something that ain't broke can often lead to tears. I also appreciate that I'm a random bloke off the internet and as such shouldn't be blindly believed.

However it doesn't take much common sense to realise that unless you need to update to accommodate a new product release ( or to fix a known major bug) fixing something that ain't broke is not the most rational of behaviours.

what version are you on then surely you must have updated at least once
