Firmware updates

I'm sorry for my ignorance about what I'm going to ask.

I have a K-50 and, in the newsletter which just arrived in my e-mail, there is a notice of a firmware update for it.

Firstly, what is firmware and what does it do? Secondly, How do I use/apply it?

Many thanks in advance.

Jan.

Firmware is the software code that governs how your camera operates. It's inbuilt at the factory, but occasionally Pentax fix bugs (errors in the code) or add new features. You download it onto a memory card and follow the instructions provided. Only one thing to make sure is that your battery is fully charged as it's a disaster if the camera goes flat during the process.

Thank you very much, Tigershoot. I appreciate your help.

I've just checked the battery in my camera and it appears to be practically full. Is is safe to top it up?

Cheers,

Jan.

Yes, no problem. These batteries do not have that memory effect of the old Ni-Cads.

Ohhhh dear, this klutzy, disaster-prone old technophobe is quaking in her boots before she even begins! My camera works fine so I may just give it a miss until my son is available to do it for me.

Thank you to everyone who's helped this old chook.

Cheers,

Jan.

Jan,
Don't fret. It's a very straight forward job. I have done it loads of times. If the battery is not fully charged, the camera will refuse to start the process.
