Pentax K1 preview

Well that kinda stood out ..... Haven't watched it all yet, but Tony Northrups assessment and comparisons all seem very fair, and he places the new camera descriptively within the wider ranges and competition. Clearly he's impressed, as it seems likely that the market as a whole will be as well.

Tony identifies a couple of Pentax FF lenses as rebadged Tamrons but without the anti-shake; claims the Tamrons are excellent lenses when tested on other systems but hasn't tested the Pentax outfit. Now, when I asked the Ricoh/Pentax rep at the Photography Show if the Pentax lenses are just rebranded Tamrons as has been rumoured he said absolutely not. He said Tamron make the Pentax lenses to an engineering standard set by Pentax and using glass supplied by Pentax; I don't know if this is true but it would be good if this could be verified.

Another interesting point - he reckons that if you put a really top quality lens on an APS-C body the results are indistinguishable from using a FF and questions why Pentax is going down this route when maybe a 36MP sensor in an APS-C would make more sense given the huge range of lenses available in that format. I'm not totally convinced by that, the only weak point in the K-1 he identifies is the small range of lenses currently available. Otherwise an insightful review worth watching.

I turned it off as soon as I saw all he had was a picture of the K-1 and he didn't actually have a camera to review.

Mike it is not a review he just gives the spes of the camera along with his thoughts on it. He does say later he would like to do a full review at some point. If Pentax will loan him a camera and lens to do so.

Did he really suggest putting a 36mp APS-C sensor in the camera? There's a reason nobody has done this before and its called NOISE. Makes you wonder about the validity of anything else he has to say

Sensor shift has been on Pentax bodies for ages too. Perhaps he's just woken up to what Pentax offers that other makes don't.

I don't think he has ever really looked at Pentax cameras in the past. I know they did a comparison test with the Ks2 and other models of similar type. He did also highly rate that camera. Other than its video capability as compared to the other cameras.

Wonder if he knows how many wonderful lenses pentax users have or can have . Sometimes his reviews can be very blinkered also .

Well if the rest of the photo world has just woken up to what Pentax offer it can't be a bad thing. But where have they all been all this time? The K-1 isn't that different to its APS-C predecessors other than having a lot more buttons to press! Better than hunting through menus when out on a shoot (providing the buttons aren't pressed by mistake!)
