Manual mode most for me just like to have full control over all the settings.

My preference is for Av when using DA Lenses. I use this to control depth of field. I supose this is also a hangover from using manual cameras.

I use M on M Lenses.

I sometimes use P when using a separate flashgun.

TV most of the time, I have my Tamron 70-300 almost permanently fixed to my camera when out walking, and the shutter speed is set more or less around 300th sec, (hate camera shake) and I adjust the iso if need be. All other lenses are used with AV or manual.

Wow! I'm the first to favour Sv then. I've set the K10, K20 and K-7 with one dial for aperature and the other dial for ISO. Control of DOF and the ISO where I want it. The camera looks after the shutter speed. If I need a specific shutter speed I can flick through either ISO or aperature to achieve this. My favourite anyway

Not many of you use the P-mode, is there any reason?
I sometimes use it in problematic situations were sometimes SV is better and then AV, it's quite easy to switch between those modes when in P

I have tried P mode a couple of times. I the only thing I see it good for is bracketing your subject. Is there another good reason to use it? I am not being sarcastic, i just haven't used it much and can't see any advantages.

It seems Av mode is winning out.

My film camera was aperture priority so that's what I'm used to but on my K200D I use P a lot because with the dial set to change aperture it is effectively Av mode. The advantage is that if I see something happening I need to photograph quickly, I can turn on the camera and snap away knowing the shutter speed will usually be ok. If I have more time I can then choose the aperture with the rear dial.
Secondly I use M for manual lenses.

I use P mode about 75% of the time. I like the option of adjusting the shutter speed directly if it's getting a little low for hand-holding, but of course it's just as easy to alter the aperture in Av to get the same result.

Av is my preferred option in bright situations, where the shutter speed is less likely to fall below a hand-holdable level at the chosen aperture.

All in all, I don't think there's much to choose between the modes. Tv is more convenient for action shots (of which I take few) and Av is marginally quicker for shots where DoF is the key, but fractions of a seconds don't make much difference in landscape work. It's down to personal preference and another example of wider choices creating further dilemmas for the photographer.

My old Minolta XK has Av and manual -- so one less thing to worry about.

Read what Aero said.

In normal mode it's like the green mode and is fully automatic.
But when you change the aperture it works like AV mode and when you change the shutterspeed it works like TV.
The ability to switch so fast between these modes is just very handy in some situations.

I use it as an advance auto mode and when the camera does something I don't want i can change that to my liking.
