It is good i read the description because i was thinking about the film genre "noir" or did i had it by the right end and you're looking for such look?

I am looking for main objects that are predominantly black, so I can see how to capture the detail...and not lose so much of it.

my favourite recent take on the film noir genre is the graphic novel styles such as "Sin City"...
I tried to pay homage to the genre with one of my recent shoots:

Seems it's already explained, just think of detective movies most of them are Noire to.
I think you could combine the two, will give it a try if i've time but no promises.
