How many here would buy it if it only cost $3000?

I think a more sensible price would be £2,000 -> £2,499

Such long focal lengths are not for my style of photography so I wouldn't buy it even at that price. I'd much rather spend £2,500 on a Pentax DA* 30mm/f1.0 lens

The 100mm polarising filter won't be cheap.

It just goes to show the principle of "you can't win" because posters have been clamouring for a long lens just like the 560mm, and now it's here don't want it?

Who bought the 600mm when it was still on the list?

Anyway, we'll see what the final price is, and I'm sure that Pentax will have done the numbers and will know how many to make and where the sales will be.
Best regards, John

It won't be necessary either - it comes with its own drop-in 40.5mm polariser.

The same would probably apply were Pentax to produce a full frame camera

I'm sure you're right. It's something that's common in selling. "I'd buy one if only it was blue." "We've made it available in blue." "That's interesting, I'll think about it."

It's easy to say what we want when we don't have to make the buying decision now.

Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.

I was referring to the hypothetical size of the filter needed on a 30mm f/1.0

My long Nikon lenses have drop in filters, so I'm already familiar with that principal.

As I have said previously, I would by a Pentax FF body if they produce one. It would allow me to use the 28mm Shift and 15mm ultra wide as they were intended.

Until the AF is up to spec, long glass on the current range of Pentax bodies is wasted for fast action shots. Static subjects would be fine of course.

That's a ridiculous, or at best a flippant, statement John.

I think the various forums have well established what people wanted and the price they were prepared to pay.
If you wanted a mini convertible and the company said "we've made it but it will cost you 3 times the price of a normal mini" how would you react ? Pretty much like sane people on here and the other forums have reacted I'd imagine.

There are plenty here and elsewhere that would buy it at the US$2,000 - US$3,000 price-point, which is where the market is at for a f5.6 560mm (since Canon charge US$1,300 for their incredibly sharp and ultra fast focusing USM 400/5.6).

As you said though we'll have to see where the price ends up and IF this actually appears on shelves and not as a special order only.

very much a specialist item - I would love the 560 mm lens but even at £2000 or above economics is a factor - we all moan about our DA* lenses being £600-1000 pounds but at least they get used frequently...all I hope that it would be available for rental.

As for the FA*600, I could not afford that when it was available, my funds limiting me to a £400 AT-X Tokina 400mm, I used that often until I sold it on here, if it or the 250-600 became readily available again then I would probably swoop.
