Surely they should be able to use some sort of lock nut? Seems pretty poor to me as the rest of the tripod seems very well made (made in Myanmar amazingly).

I'm not impressed with a couple of things I've had from Vanguard. However I will say the customer service was good. Have you tried to get replacement parts. They are just on the south coast At Christchurch

I think when you put it together again you should use spring washers or nuts with a nylon locking strip in them.
Just the thoughts of a retired engineer.

That's what I thought. I am surprised they don't do it in the factory. Other than that, I have been very pleased with my Vanguard. I have had the metal version and now have the carbon fibre version. Only 200 grammes difference. Somehow I actually preferred the metal version.
My father in law fixed it so it should be fine.

Just shows the importance of checking the tightness of your nuts and the importance of checking gear before heading out.
