The card format shouldn't be a problem. So if the card hasn't failed, the problem is either with the card reader or the tablet. If you have a USB flash drive (memory stick) that you know works, try putting that in the tablet's USB slot to check whether the tablet recognises it. If it doesn't, the problem is with the tablet. If it does, the card reader is the problem.
Just a thought - sometimes I find that I haven't fully inserted the card into one of my card readers, it needs a firm push to make good contact with the card's internals. Worth checking with yours.

The reader, when connected to my iMac works straight off, so either the MicroSD end of the reader (it's double ended) is faulty or there is some other reason. I am going to give up on trying to use the tablet.

It sounds like your Samsung Tablet needs to connect to a card reader or USB flash drive via a OTG cable (OTG = On The Go). They are readily available and cheap. It's to do with how Android handles a USB connection. As far as I understand it, when you connect a device to an Android phone or tablet, Android assumes that the device wants to access the phone/tablet's storage (e.g. connecting to a computer to upload or download files to/from the phone/tablet). With a card reader, you neeed the roles to be reversed i.e. the phone/tablet needs to access the storage in the connected device. An OTG cable enables the role reversal.
I'm no expert at these things, but have had the experience of a phone (not Samsung) in which the OTG facility had been disabled so even an OTG cable wouldn't do the trick. It looks like Samsung are more sensible and allow OTG to work - with a cable, of course.

The reader claims to be OTG compatible so maybe it's faulty. It's going back...

Seeing as I am travelling with a good tablet I thought I could connect the card via a MicroSD reader. This is the one I got..

Trouble is, the tablet just does not see the SD card? Do you think it's the format of the card? Using a Pentax K3ii and a Sandisk 32gb card
