Cable switches or remotes

I've had 2 cable switches both of which packed up after a while - one was by Pentax, the other a compatible. Maybe I was a bit rough with them!!

To avoid the problem of a wire that can be danmaged I am thinking of getting a remote. I assume many of you use a remote - what is your experience with one and are they effective?

Any advice on this would be welcome.:

I bought a cable remote about 9 months ago off flea-bay. It has the letters JJC and MR series on the top, and has now stopped working, so I would also like to hear of any recommendations.

I have a remote, by Pentax and love it. Gives me the ability to move around without worry of wire. The only drawback - it must be pointed at the camera with no obstruction. I also have a Pentax cable switch, which is handy if I'm not dashing around.

There is a remote available that uses radio signals instead of the Pentax IR. This would be the best bet, but I'm sure it is pricey! I believe the name is Pocket Wizard. I shall see what I can find out.

I use a Wired and Wireless twin 1 R3-UT which i bought to replace my Pentax digi cable release. It works on any make of camera, Wireless range is 50 m on Pentax and Nikon and 25 m on Canon but it works as a normal cable release too. I still have my Pentax I R remote which i keep in my memory card wallet for travelling light.

I use the Pentax IR remote for tripod work. I have attached it to a lanyard so I can wear it round my neck. Saves dropping it and helps you work out which way round it is in the dark!

I find it much less hassle than a wired remote.

Works very well and with your k-7 can use both behind and infront of the camera.

My Pentax Remote Control F is now 15 years old and still running on the original battery. TBH I would have thought I would have lost it by now.

That Remote control F is so tiny I'm scared of loosing it , sadly I can't see how to get a lanyard onto it to stop me putting it down and not finding it again .

I used a lanyard from (I think) a USB drive. It has a thin loop attached by a spring clip to a thicker neck strap. After taking the remote apart, I made two grooves either side of one of the corner screw posts and then put it back together with the loop round the screw post and out through the grooves.

Pentax used to supply a strap with two little pockets on it - one for the remote and one for the eyepiece cover. Sadly they no longer do that, and I have now switched to a new, more comfortable strap. Kata make a strap with two similar pockets. very useful, but not the strap I chose .

My remote now lives in my SD card case, a natty little case I acquired when I bought a card a while ago.

Had been thinking of attaching a small ring with super glue or some such and then attaching a lanyard .
