All the books I have tend to show butterflies with their wings open (being the most decorative side).
The two most likely "groups" are Brushfoots and Browns (very imaginitive on someones part).
The first have Brushfeet and include Tortoiseshells and Admirals (some 16-18 species)
The second are Brown and include Meadow, Heath (about 12 species)
Snag is, sadly I don't think you have enough information to make a positive ID(purely from my point of view- Charlotte, for exampe, may hit it spot on)

I agree difficult BUT a very interesting photo.
I'd say a small tortoiseshell from the wing edge shape but the odd placing of what looks like an 'eye' colouring on the wing has me puzzled.

A good site for butterfly id is link
It is run in conjunction with the butterfly society. Loads of info and photos of full butterfly and of underwings
Follow the link to identification and drop down to Nymphalidae and look though the photos. There are one or two contenders, unfortuntley the light on yours is obscuring the true colour.
