Grolsch Kanon or Amsterdam Maximator (same stuff, different brandname).
11,6% alcohol

Old Tom is made by Robinsons Of Stockport (my local Brewery)
It's 8.5% and certain pubs do sell it in Pints (nutters!)
Having said that, in small doses it is fine.

I have tried the strongest ale made in Britain, namely "Ths Dogs Bollocks" yep thats is name. It's 15% and sold only in 1/3 pints. It's an acquired taste but not that treacly. Unlike some very strong continental beers.
The only beer that is palatable, indeed tasty, is Red Stripe Crucial Brew at 8.5% too, but you cannot find it anywhere anymore.
Personally, I like Theakstons XB and Old peculuar and Carlsberg Elephant Brew if I want a strong ale.
But never give me ordinary Carlsberg,Fosters, XXXX, as they are fizzy water with no taste.

Are you sure about that? I knew the D's Bs when it was out and it was between 5.2 and 6.5% brewed by Wychwoods.

It has been sold as "Amsterdam Maximator" long before Grolsch started selling it under their own name.
the Amsterdam brand was introduced for export purposes, most of the Maximator went to Russia where the amount of alcohol is more important then the taste...

Must be a different one. This was served at a Sheffield beer fest a couple of years back, and I can assure you it was 15%

Sounds as if it was a different one as Wychwoods stopped producing it several years ago.

When alcohol reaches that sort of percentage (or even a bit less) in a real Ale I think it really becomes classified as a Barley wine.
At that level alcohol starts to become a dominating taste and for me it's not as much of a pleasure to consume.

I am more usually a strong lager drinker but when i was attending a 3 week course in Hereford a few years ago i enjoyed a draught bitter called Flowers. I have since tried it in a can but that was awful!
I went to an Apple Festival last October and there were loads of Ciders to sample and had a good long chat with Gillian Bulmer. Since then i have been hooked on a Welsh Cider called Black Dragon. It`s a pleasant change from my usual Carlsberg Special Brew!!!

Ooo! Now that sounds interesting PeteL! I am a cider drinker, (no I don't like the Wurzels much :wink rather than a beer drinker but I can't get good cider, any cider in fact here. I shall have to look for your Black Dragon when I'm next over.

I love Hobgoblin, but for a summer beer there is Badger Golden Glory.

The only beer to have given me a hangover in recent years is Bishop's Finger.

Thinking of beer adverts reminds me of those for Shepherds Neame Spitfire Ales (very politically incorrect and now hard to find) -
