BEER!

"Lucky" doesn't begin to do justice...

There are so-called beers I would (and have) turned my nose up at. Bud Light anyone, or perhaps a Coors? As the Wychwood Brewery ad for Hobgoblin says: "Afraid to taste something, lager boy?"

Now I have offended half the group I shall go back to work and hide...

I was forced to experience Bud while in the USA .

Never again - I cannot say what I really thought about that

I would easily pass on any Larger and Newcastle Brown

I never touch Heineken, nasty stuff. A shame they have taken over good local breweries and turned them into tat too.

Bud, Coors and Millers. yuk

However some of the best beers I've drunk have been American, from some of their great micro-breweries.

I also really liked the ales from Loch Fyne Brewery, a superb micro brewery at the head of Loch Fyne.

We used to enjoy Brakspears Ales, when they were brewed in Henley, but I don't think we've tried them since Wychwood took over.

Morland was another favourite which has gone, taken over by Greene King. When it brewed in Abingdon it was a local beer for us in Wantage.

We shall have to get over to the UK sometime to try out some of the your suggested beers

Don't fall into the trap of thinking that all lagers are the pale chemical fizz consumed by lager boys.

Lager is a style of brewing using bottom fermenting yeast and storage of the finished product. There are some excellent cask-conditioned lagers brewed in UK - Schiehallion and Galloway Gold to name just two. Sam Smith also produces a good bottled lager.

Hooky Gold is my favourite - pale, light and very tasty, in fact all of the Hook Norton beers are good.

Regularly consumed at Wombat Lodge via Sainsbury's. Lovely stuff - Old Peculiar that is, not Sainsbury's!

I was reminded by a colleague of a line in red dwarf which goes along the line of "the water has been recycled so many times it tastes like Dutch lager" - by Kryten I think...

True - Heineken, Amstel and Bavaria out of cans are pretty awful. However, drink them as tapbiers (draught) in the native country they are pretty enjoyable beers. Less well known are Jupiler, Gulpener (which is rather GOOD), Brand and a favourite of mine, Hertog Jan.

BUT... having lived in Munich for 18 months, my diet consisted of:

Augustiner Edelstoff
Franziskaner Hefe-Weizen
Konig Ludwig Dunkel

I think you only forgot to name Grolsch, by the looks of it you should have placed it with the first three.
And indeed don't drink them out of cans go for a bottled one then.

I'm really not a beer guy so don't ask me anything.

Gulpener is Pils of choice in the Gwyn house. Hertog Jan in the houses of sons of Gwyn.

Sons of Gwyn did manage to drink enough Dommelsch to get a free bike. They and their friends collected the tops and after seriously damaging a lot of livers became the proud owners of a red bike with a beer crate sized holder on the front of it.
