If it has to be cheap the best route is HP. Their Photo smart 7600 series and higher use a dedicated grey cartridge. Combined with the colour one.
This results in a perfect monochrome print output, without any nasty colour casts. And because you use colour ink also, you can duo-tone your prints also.
I have the 7660, specially set up for that purpose. 6 years old now, but still going strong. Highly recommended.

Just make sure you get the special grey cartridge. You'll need it for the Monochrome prints.
Happy printing.

Hi Lilly, sorry for butting in on this thread. I've looked at e-bay and if you just type in Hp photosmart 7660 you will come across lots of printer cartridges but there are also a couple of 7660's. Including the postage they come in about the same as what Martin says.

If you want larger than A4 prints, then the Epson 2880 A3+ or Epson 3800 A2 are superb printers for colour and monochrome.
I have the Epson 3800 and can recommend it.
I also have an Epson 1200 A3+ and to get a good mono requires printing using the black only.

Hi Lilly,
The 7660 isn't in production any more. So old stock is being dumped I'll guess. But as I said, if it has to be cheap, A4 is enough and you want a very good Monochrome output The 7600 series is the best value for money. if I remember correctly I paid € 176,- for it 6 years ago.
Didn't find it expensive at the time. And back then it was praised for its black and white printing quality's in all the major magazines.
Get one while you have the chance, if you need a dedicated A4 mono printer.
