I learned to drive on a 1939 Ford Prefect (a year younger than me!) and as far as I remember the 1949 model was pretty similar with all the original quirks - three forward gears with no synchromesh between first and second and vacuum operated windscreen wipers that wiped slowly as you went uphill and fast as you went down.

That`s the one Archie - I used to keep a cut raw potato in the car in case of heavy rain - wiped on the outside it helped dissipate the droplets ?? So I was told.30 mpg @ 3/6p per GALLON.60 miles to a pint of oil.Built like a tank with real chromium bumpers.I used to polish it with Brasso.................got the shock of my life when I turned up at Hotel School one day and saw the Head of College get out of the same model in green.

It's -11 again this morning so the damn car won't start again.
I called my man yesterday but he is run off his feet at the moment. I said no problem I''ll call in week or so as it is working again.
I had the camera with me again ready for the stunning morning light, but no go.
I am fed up.
I just hope the car starts later so I can get to the shop.
Big freeze due to end tomorrow - bringing us snow and frozen rain next week. I think I prefer -11.

It's always sad to see the demise of something, but, I can't honestly recall the last time I bought anything with the Kodak name on it. Its rather like the demise of the local shop, everyone moans about it but how many people actually used them apart from the occasional newspaper, and I don't even use our local shop for that now.

It is believed that Kodak is sitting on a Patent 'goldmine' and the perceived value of the patents is far greater than the net liabilities of the company.
And (as happended in a way with Pentax) the branding of Kodak for cameras could be sold to another company whilst Eastman Kodak keep it for printers and onliine services.
Interesting. The Kodak Richoh And Pentax company. Or maybe not!

Huge apologies for straying on track there! I will hang my head in shame.
So the weekend is planned out...
Muppets movie, fish supper*, flying, rugby & beer.
Then dropping the other half off at the airport Sunday morning, house to myself for a few days which means I get to watch what I want on the TV and eat takeaways every night.
Woo!
*fish and chips in the rest of the world

I remember my first visit to a fish & chip shop in Aberdeen in the mid 60s.greynolds wrote...*fish and chips in the rest of the world
There was a very large menu board with an array of items, some of which I'd never heard of before. The only item I couldn't see was a mention of fish and I actually had to ask if they sold it with chips
Also took a little while to get used to "supper" being "tea-time"

Out on a friends boat a few years ago. A full Scottish breakfast was cooked, including tattie scones, square sausage and haggis.
It was fascinating to see the looks on a few of the faces (from the south of England) trying to work out what they were eating!

Should see the price of Haggis in West Australia. Major problem getting decent haggis here. Even a pint is nearly seven pounds now.

The mystery of the vanishing coffee cup.
I went to pick up my empty espresso cup to take it into the kitchen, but I dropped it. I heard it fall, and it didn't sound to have broken but it fell behind some junk waiting to be sorted.
So I moved the junk, sorting some as I went. No cup. Crawled on hands and knees to see if it had rolled under something. No cup. Moved furniture. No cup.
It has vanished.
Now I know it is small, and made of glass but still I should be able to see it, but I can't. Very very odd.

As an aside I took my Eagle RV Jeep kit car for a service to the local KwikFit some years ago - it had a MKIV Cortina engine and running gear - I said to the mechanic " I bet you enjoy working on something as simple as this ?" - "No way" - he replied "I`ll get me hands dirty" !!!!!!!!
