July 1st: Canada Day
First Monday of September: Labor Day
October: Thanksgiving (Thanksgiving is not celebrated the same day in the U.S.A.)

I can't think of an excuse for a day off - can't we just have one - the British have bank holidays just for the sake of it, so why not the Dutch?
The September day off sounds good to me .
We had a huge storm in the night - the thunder was deafening and at times the lightening was right over us. Scary stuff, and I normally love a good storm.
Now back to watching a soggy Wemeldinge. I hope my son's new coat is waterproof .
Looks like it will be dry later so the fireworks can go ahead.

Typical Québecois - cannot even win in the standard British way and choose the French method - "we might appear to have come second but actually we think we won"Anvh wrote:

I think Newfies have the right idea and celebrate Queen Victoria's birthday

We may well have St George's Day to add to our tally rumour has it. However, the Government still have to make up their minds... Still they have other things to worry about at the moment...
I wonder if the expenses row,(Now forgotten it would appear), will have much bearing on any outcome?

I think that we should have two further holidays in Britain.
Trafalgar Day - which would give a day towards the end of the year when then are no others as St Georges day would be close to Easter and mayday.
VE day - to show how we were vital in ensuring the freedoms in Europe that all others take for granted.

The number of folk in this country who do NOT work - either because they are retired, cannot find employment,or just enjoy sitting on their posteriors and collecting the lavish handouts from the "soft" government - really begs the question ......" who actually has these days off ? "
It`s not more holidays that are needed but more production whilst at work in order to get us back on track !
End of non party political rant !

Thanks for the links - what a fascinating history the place has! And two VCs from previous conflicts no less...
Little wonder there is some quiet reflection on ANZAC Day around the area then.

Not long back, I suggested to my then 6 year old son that I didn't feel like going to work on Monday. His response was "You could pretend you're sick". That boy is older than his years....

Having been in " catering " for all my working life, from 17 until I was 62 , I never had the opportunity to be " sick " . My old boss used to say ( I lived in a "cupboard" on the 6th floor of the hotel ) " get down here on duty if you`re still breathing " - and of course I did.............
As a self employed businessman there was no point in being sick as there was no other way to earn a living. When I joined a large hotel group I was so busy I accrued 50 lieu days in 5 years of employment just trying to get the place built up and successful - so much for loyalty - they made me redundant 2 1/2 years later and I never did get my days back - more fool me !!
I sometimes wonder who has the right answer and who was the mug !
