Another pointless thread

I'm a southerner chaps. Half Welsh, but still basically a southerner.

I notice a fair few Northerners and Scots all too happy to move to the south forcing up housing prices, resulting in houses being built over precious open spaces, drinking the water (which for London and great swathes of the south actually comes from the rivers not flooded Wales or Scotland), moaning about effete southerners all the time, but refusing to move back north.

The Welsh reservoirs and those like Kielder were intended for those Northern cities of Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle and the like, plus that blot in the middle, Birmingham. Never intended for southerners.

It seems that southerners, like women, are expected to put up with all these constant digs at them, particularly in this thread .

End of southern rant.

Most of the Manchester/Liverpool water comes from the Lake District.
They've just built a massive pipeline (1M Diam. I think) along the
East Lancs Road joining Manchester - Liverpool supplies.

the trouble is they can not plan and build fast enough. I think it was in the 1960's the decided to build Kielder water and a distribution system to supply industry on Teesside. By the time it was finished there was no big industry left on Teesside
The same happened with Llyn Brianne. It was built to control water levels so that heavy industry in Swansea could be supplied, now all the industry has gone and we're left with a flooded valley that nobody is allowed to use (Welsh Water won't allow boating or anything else there - would it really be so hard to put a few booms around areas containing water take-offs and spillways so you can allow people to sail/canoe/whatever on the rest?)

I can sort of understand "no boating" on the Elan Valley network as the roads just aren't suitable for people bringing trailerloads of boats up there and trying to find places to launch them. Llyn Brianne, however, has a good road up from Llandovery which was built to handle lorry traffic during the build.

But I think we should not emphasise the North/South divide and find some common ground. Like opinions on the French!

No risk of a drought here I'm afraid. Yet another cold (14C), wet miserable day. I am sick of it. Hard for you lot across the north sea to comprehend I know. The cloud is swirling around the Netherlands like water down a plug hole. Our own little bit of miserable weather. Again.
Apparently we have had just one summer which has been officially dry since the turn of the century and that was in 2003.

Having said all that I'd rather have all this water falling from the sky than be in Somalia, Kenya or Ethiopia right now.

A neighbour's old apple tree has just blown over .

Luckily it hasn't caused any damage. Another neighbour is out there with his chain saw clearing it from the road and footpath.
