fair enough, I'm not going to the UK in the winter anyway
At least it starts getting a lot lighter when the snow's on the ground, reflecting the light.

My brother has a set of snow chains which I think he used about twice last winter - he was the only person at his office who was able to get into the car park without ending up in the wall as a result!
That's an odd experience with the Kangoo. I learned to drive in a Citroen ZX 1.9D with cheap tyres and it'd go pretty much anywhere providing the snow wasn't too deep, it probably had a similar power output, wheelbase and weight. No ABS, traction control, or stability assist so you learned to spot wheelspin pretty quickly.

I realised last icetrack that Audi set the ASR & EDS systems up on ice. Leaving them switched in with studs on, you press the pedal and the car deals with it.
Turning them off means you have to dose things really finely if you don't want spin for whatever reason; leaving them in allows minimum amounts of spin and allows you to turn your brain off. My respect for those systems grew significantly.
ESP was kinda strange, though, because you could feel the car arguing with you as you wanted to hoon through cones at 65km/h on snowpack and it simply didn't want to play ball. With it off? around 4 cones was the max before it span. That was also very, very cool: sit and wait for the movement to stop
It also confirmed to me something I was already pretty sure about: ESP won't regulate unless the car is turning. Slides are perfectly doable without any electronic interference.

I've had an experience where to this day I don't know whether it was ESP or me that kept the car off the barriers. Was doing about 50mph and touched a slush-covered white line, leading to a fishtailing slide. I was just pointing the wheels in the direction of the road rather than frantic opposite lock twirling and keeping the power steady (FWD car, so you do this to pull it out of the slide).
It settled after a bit of wagging, I know I'd turned traction control off at the time but don't know whether ESP is even fitted to 2006 Saab 9-3 TiDs.
