Our street 5 minutes ago. Raining really hard again now.
I am soaked through yet again from walking the dogs - even wearing waterproofs.
On a brighter note the flat roof isn't leaking....yet.

Does anyone else think John Riley's avatar looks a bit like that guy on the PPG homepage?

I'll have you know that my avatar was shot by Mr Paul Jones, a leading glamour photographer from the North West of England.

Surely you can tell that?
Best regards, John

Euhhh oops! Not the mediteranean looking chap on the homepage. That guy looks nothing like John's avatar I meant the guy on the page where you submit photos (the one with the glasses!)

John, yes of course, many apologies! What I meant to say was "John Riley's glamourous avatar"

Luckily I live on a terp - a little hill so it isn't in the house - but by the neighbours across the road it is now flowing through their houses . It is in my front garden but hasn't reached the house. No doubt the space under the floor is full though.

We had new drains put in the street a couple of years ago, which take only the rain water since we always get flooded in heavy rain. At least now it is only rainwater and not sewage in the street so that it a minor plus.

The kids are enjoying it. Except those who have to cycle through it to get home that is.

My son is stuck at work. His route home involves a tunnel, which is 1.5 metres deep in water right now .

I have to say that I have "always" thought the avatar looked like a much better looking version of Greg Wallace from Masterchef - hits me every time and I expect one day he will say "phwoooar" to one of my piccies - lol

My husband just got in. He works in Hengelo, in the east of the country. His building was flooded. His office is on the first floor so he was OK, but those on the ground floor had a real problem - water up to their desk tops in some cases.
He had to paddle across the car park to the car, which luckily was not damaged.
100mm - that's nearly 4 inches of rain today .

Those look fairly modern house Gwyn, so if flooding is such a problem why dont they build the houses on stilts? or at least raise the level of the ground floor.

It normally isn't a problem, the drainage couldn't handle the amount of rain.

About houses, there are some floating ones here link

They are all at least 60 and some as much as a 100 years old. So no not modern at all. Modernised, yes, but modern? no.
Most were built like ours on little man-made hills, since we are just about the lowest part of the town, but over the years, the road level has been raised, there is of course a lot more paving about, and so the water collects, and occasionally floods. Since the new dual drainage system it is a lot better than before. The rain from houses goes into the ground in soak-aways, but the ground is sodden. And 4 inches of rain is a bit unusual in an 8 hour period.
The neighbours have got the water out - they had already put the furniture up stairs or on blocks so that wasn't damaged thank goodness, and their floors are all tiled so easy to clean up.

Other towns were far worse of than us. Hengelo was aright mess, and they even had to close the motorway there. Den Haag and Amsterdam were badly hit too.

It's raining again, and we are threatened with more downpours in teh night .
At least I only take the dogs once tomorrow as they are off to the kennels. I just hope my shoes have dried out by then.
