One and off, yes. But it's seldom been truer than now.Its also safe to say that people have been making the same comment as George about society "collapsing" since 1820 as well.
At times during the last century people were boasting of the "Great Society" and "You've never had it so good". Those were times of noticeable improvement. Now we have noticeable decay.

I think most people speak from personal experience with regards to society, for instance I can walk down my hight street at any time, even on a Friday or Saturday night without any fear, I would not have said that of the last village I lived in, only five miles away. After saying that life is becoming very cheep in UK society, yesterday I heard a story about a man who sustained a fatal head injure after arguing about the garden fence with a neighbour. I have been reeding a book called Steel Bonnets, it is about the "border reivers", it is a history of Northumberland during a very violent period. The reivers, robbed & burned whole sections of the English / Scottish border villages using loose alliances with clans even changing nationality when if it was convenient. These times are now romanticism as part of our past with local "characters" not doubt villains at the time recounted in song.

Well the signs are that under the new government the decay is really going to kick in over the next 5 years. Already they've cancelled Labour's progressive school building scheme - leaving schools and communities in the lurch, not to mention thousands of jobs on the line. I'm a bit concerned about where we're going.

Yes, there has, for the percentage above a certain level. For those who fall below the line life can be as desperate as you could imagine, or maybe more than you could imagine.has there not been an overall improvement since my UK ancestor left the slums of Bermondesy in 1820.
I have met people who literally have nothing, and that was an eye-opener to me in what we think of as a civilised society.
Best regards, John

As should we all be. But let's hope the lesson is learned. Labour will ALWAYS wreck the economy. It's an immutable law.Well the signs are that under the new government the decay is really going to kick in over the next 5 years. The sun hasn't stopped shining here. 35C here yesterday, slightly cooler today at 31 right now, no significant rain for along time. Smoking bans in all the woods.
Thunderstorms and potential flooding forecast for this evening, but not enough rain to actually make a difference.
I am not complaining, but a little cooler would be nicer.

We have just changed the handles on our windows. So can now open all of them for the first time in years - just in time for a heatwave and it being hotter outside than inside. Doh!
Still shooting in the dark (literally and metaphorically)...

Well it`s nearly the end of another fine July weekend! I would like to say a big thankyou to the local supermarket for a fine selection of ice cream. Mrs Cedrics fish have reproduced and we have scores of the little creatures doing their best not to be eaten by mum and dad and three other adults. I can almost here the words "can we have a bigger pond." Likewise I can feel torn back muscles already. Mrs Grace went off to work early in the Spit this morning and last night a DC3 trolled across me airspace. makes a change from the punters stacking up for Stanstead.

Wow Tony, what a gem. The Spit that Mrs Grace has would be a tad faster, use a touch more fuel and the engine growls like crazy. DC3 has just flown over again.

I have just seen a piece on the news about the Battle of Britain. It showed, they said, the last airworthy Spitfire from the battle. In total, how many Spits still actually fly

I'm given to understand that the number of airworthy Spits actually increases. The engines and airframes can be overhauled and there is a steady demand for airworthy examples.
There is a long-term plan to get another Lancaster flying - the owners of "Just Jane" are apparently gathering parts, as she's essentially capable of flight but needs the paperwork to prove it.

Not being qualified to comment on your society but my first thought when reading this was, has there not been an overall improvement since my UK ancestor left the slums of Bermondesy in 1820.
Its also safe to say that people have been making the same comment as George about society "collapsing" since 1820 as well.
