Another pointless thread

The shed, too many previous spills led to coughing up hair balls.

Today is a good day. After 3 years without a dog, we have now adopted a new-to-us dog from a rehoming charity. A 6 year old lurcher, the biggest dog we've ever had. It has already taken over the settee. Proper doggy portraits to come, if it will cooperate, but for now a quick snapshot will have to do. Altogether now .... ahhhhhh!

We had rescued or rehomed dogs for 40 years, all black females of uncertain parentage. 3 years ago, when our last dog died, we thought that our dog days were over thanks to Mrs L's deteriorating health. Then a few weeks ago a friend visited with his two greyhounds. And I started wondering whether it was time to have another one... Still a mongrel but not female and not black. He does, however, match the colour of the carpet so dog hairs won't be as conspicuous!

It's going to be a long, noisy night . Next door's electricity supply cable failed last night, causing a power cut for about a third of the homes on the local circuit including mine (3 phase circuit, one phase lost, each phase feeds 1/3 of homes). All except next door got power back within a few hours. However, a diesel generator is now running in next door's front garden to provide them with electricity and network people are digging holes through the night to find and fix the fault. Next door's nicely laid block paving is now in a bit of a mess and there's an ever lengthening hole in the pavement outside. Given the mess of cables and pipes under the pavement, I wouldn't be surprised if they damage one of them while fixing the electrical problem... All together now, "Oh it all makes work for the working man to do". Anyone remember that Flanders and Swann masterpiece?

I hope the power is restored soonest, Steve. Hopefully without an "unrelated" loss of water or gas supply.

We had a power cut of just six hours earlier this year. Whoopie! I thought: an evening of reading without being distracted by TV or the Internet. Then I discovered the reality of trying to read by candle light - it is nothing like the pictures in the glossy articles about hygge. Yes, yes, I know the people in those pictures are models planted into a scene of Scandinavian loveliness, but still, how is one supposed to read with a handful of tea lights?

Well, the electricity network people claim to have fixed the problem on the local network around midnight last night. However, they haven't yet reconnected my neighbour, who is still using electricity from a noisy generator. The holes in the ground have got bigger and there is now a huge chasm where the pavement used to be along most of next door's frontage. Various utility cables and pipes are now exposed and dangling in the chasm. Will the holes still be there next week? Or next month? Or next Christmas? And will the 'For Sale' sign in the corner of next door's garden attract anyone with that lot going on???

It could be worse. In the early 1990's a violent storm brought down a tree onto the town's main substation. The entire town was without electricity for several days. And we had young children at the time. What fun!!

Got back from 3 days camping and walking on the Yorkshire coast yesterday..

..turned on the tele for the news and was appalled.

What are the british public thinking of?

It was enough to drive me to drink, although I didn't actually drive, just walked 3 metres and opened a bottle of Saltaire Unity..

It was Exmoor Gold for me. And I had to walk about 10 metres - the beer is kept in the garage, the car is kept on the drive.

Well, that's me sorted and off to Bala for a couple of days enjoying the welsh scenery and narrow gauge railways.

I may post an image or two when I get back, they'll be on this thread as I'll be using a phone/ Nikon pocket cam.
