Just celebrated my birthday in the Lake District, it rained,as expected.

On the plus side I had Mrs HG to myself and a lovely time.

Even if a little wet...

The hills looked wonderful as we left, they were covered in snow.
Cheers, HG

Happy birthday HG! The Lakes are wonderful any time, unless you are sleeping under canvas!
It's His Nibs birthday today, he is 71, and Casper our grandson is 10 today too.

We went to see some paintings by Bradford's famous son David Hockney, on Saturday - his Yorkshire landscapes which are currently at the van Gogh museum. Really enjoyed seeing them and being immersed in them - some are seriously big.

He went to school with my mother...

....and lived in the area I live in, wait until the 'Seasons' pictures make their way across, they're amazing.

"Computer life" is baaa....d at the moment!!

My N4620G nettop is, I think, a laptop-based motherboard in a mains-powered very SFF chassis, and has been working fine for a long time, and even over last night and for most of today.

BUT, then, having left it ON but not in use for a few hours, I noticed that it had rebooted to the ACER Flash screen and just halted there - then no change after multiple manual reboots, and, whilst, it emits one single beep and tries to respond to keyboard (wired) key presses, it just freezes at that screen. Won't even enter the BIOS setup screen after pressing the correct access F-key.

From what I've read, it could be due to anything from HDD failure, RAM failure/displacement to M/B failure - so will have to take it apart (which is a very fiddly job!) in a day or so to see if I can find anything obviously wrong, but does anyone have any other ideas as to what's gone wrong???

And then there are a lot of (time-consuming and expensive!) problems with the planned "off-site" (it will be in the garage at the end of the garden) backup system based on a Synology NAS box and a USB-attached 4-bay unit.

The NAS box is supposed to have 2 HDD in RAID config, but one of the drives is an old ex-Sky HD box unit, and that's been reported as failing so I will be buying another one tomorrow - 20 for a NOS 500GB Seagate job from a local supplier, and so not too expensive.

However, I now have the 3rd Hornettek 4-bay USB unit (the first 2 different types turned out unsuitable because they won't auto-boot when power is applied), but the NAS box won't recognise it and so it looks like the USB unit USB interface or f/w is f**ked (and so that box will soon be on it's way back to Amazon UK - which imported it to order from AMAZON US!).

Hopefully the next (supposedly identical) Hornettek USB box (to be collected from Chesham on Weds, courtesy of ebay!) WILL work as it is supposed to be the same as the one that has worked fine on another Synology NAS box for 5yrs!

Gawd knows what will go wrong next!!

Last time a computer did that to me I scrapped it and started again.

Problems solved and, as the saying goes, so far so good.

That was 7 years ago..

...off out now to collect my new girl, I'll post an image when we get home..

I don't give in that easily - especially when I now suspect that's it's probably a memory module issue (and I have spare SODIMM modules) - anyway, I like that PC because it is very small and takes up very little desk space because it's on a wall-mount !

Congratulations HG! Have fun on your new bike.
Hopefully it is better biking weather there than it is here - it has decided to blow yet another mini gale and throw even more rain at us.

It's all tank Algi, all 17 litres worth.

They said it only had 15 of fuel in it, so I stopped off to fill up fully..

..all 2 worth

Spending today fitting all the bits I've acquired while waiting.

Mrs HG will be happy, she'll get the spare room back.
