Never heard of that Stan. Firefox will usually open another
instance if one is already running. Something must have been
set to only allow one instance, but there isn't an option
in the menu. Could be in about:config

It could be the download manager that's running?

The Firefox forum is full of complaints about v29

I've no idea Algi. This started happening a couple of "updates" ago. I was wondering if it's just another annoyance built in to Windoze 8 ? I installed Opera for now and think I may remove firefox from this system and see what happens when I re-install. there are a lot of adverts using this (Opera) browser but it's better than having to go into Task Manager or do a complete reboot each time

Hi Stuey

Not sure about the satnav front as my Tomtom is well on the blink and I refuse to deal with them. Might have to be the good old paper satnav from OS.
Enjoy life

I changed my sat nag (missus plus map) for a smart phone with sat nav - what an improvement - far less arguments
K10D, K5 plus plenty of clueless enthusiasm.

Stan, I had that for a while, some time ago. It happened if I closed Firefox and then quickly tried to re-open it. Normally if I was patient and waited a couple of seconds and tried again it was fine. Not had it since I went to W8.1.

We used paper maps last week in Hampshire. Only way to find out of the way places that sound interesting - hill forts, ruins and the like. Plenty of interesting things to see on Anglesey which TomTom won't know about, but maps will.
We did use the SatNav to find the pub we were staying in at the end of every day though. Not sure we would have found it otherwise. And that was before we enjoyed the beer (straight from the cask, on an ancient stillage).

I've tried waiting Gwyn and I still find I have to go into task manager and kill the Firefox(32bit) process or reboot the computer. I have the Win 8.1 installed on my laptop where the problem is, no problems on Win7 on the "main" computer, can have two FF browsers open at the same time which is useful sometimes. At the moment I'm using Opera and Chrome although I would prefer FF.

I'm fed up with Firefox. I close the browser, then when I click on the icon to open it again there is a message saying Firefox is running and needs to be closed. This entails going into the Task Manager and ending Firefox(32bit). Think it is Bye Bye Firefox, hello something else
It only happens to me occasionally after playing Battlefield 4 but since the recent update it has behaved. Speaking of which, I like the new layout even though it's not popular with others.

At last I seem to have cured the problem.
1. Unistalled FF including any saved data etc.
2. Run CCleaner + Reg clean.
3. Installed FF.
4. Opened Task Manager.
5. Opened and closed FF a few times.
6. Task Manager showed Process was ending ok.
7. Installed AdBlock.
8. Repeated from 5
So far so good, everything as it should be. Oh Joy

Hope that's fixed it Stan

Just found out that there's a US English and UK English version
of Firefox 28 and I've installed the US one It may only
be a different spellchecker so I might leave it, because it's
working OK.

Had a lot of trouble yesterday with EaseUS Free Partion app
It installed about 5 services running in the background and
using up about 50% of the CPU so it's now been removed.
Still got the excellent MiniTool Partition Wizard on this PC.

I've used the EaseUS Free Partition but once everything was partitioned I uninstalled it. Never had any problems with it except I get an email now and then about their latest greatest.

I think what happened with FF was when I upgraded it didn't like AdBlock and that was preventing FF from fully closing. Since going through the hoops above it seems to be behaving, fingers crossed.

I am beginning to think I need a new desktop computer as the old one is groaning under the weight of the things on it. My main difficulty is deciding what to keep. If I was honest though I think a format of the whole thing would rejuvenate it.
