My sons school teacher reckons it is only time to get up when you can smell the bacon

The sky has gone a funny colour. It isn't grey!

It's blowing a gale here, sky is various shades of grey with patches of white and blue.

Is that the one way down in Northumberland or the one up here in Scotland. Which (oddly) is further south?

The one in Northumberland. There are a few places named Newbiggin but only one, as far as I know, named Newbiggin by the Sea.

In my teenage cycle touring days when I studied road maps assiduously I found there was at least one Newbiggin in each of the Northern-most counties in England; Northumberland's being the best known. But they were also in Co. Durham (a farm hamlet near Lanchester), North Yorks when it was called the North Riding, Westmorland and Cumberland.
So there's also one some where in South West Scotland Gareth?

Newbiggin-on-Lune...

Along the route of one of my annual cycle dashes between Ais Gill & Greenholme, usually when avoiding you David , whilst photographing steam trains up there.

I believe the Scottish versions are Newbigging, having rolled the car off the road near the Lanarkshire one

Newbiggin derives from new biggin ie a new building. I have also heard it derives from new beginning ie a fresh start, which I think sounds better. Newbiggin has been lucky for me on several counts, regardless of it's origin.
