A Short Lesson in Composition

How's this for a weird coincidence?

Cycled down to the beach this morning and saw the daffodil picture on the way back. Went for a short walk on the Mendip Hills this afternoon and saw the line of trees.

I prefer the second one (by quite a bit ). The BW conversion in the first one seems to need some contrast, there's not enough black. While I'm not a huge fan of colour popping it's okay here, but perhaps would be stronger if it was just one of the flowers.

Normally I would say you composition is off but it works great for me, kudos for the courage to do this.

In the last photo, I would try to lower the noise a bit since I think it might look better cleaner but that's your freedom to do or not

Everyone should learn the basic rules of composition, and everyone should try and break them as often as they see fit.

In this case I think the Daffs work because there is interest in the fence above them, on the other hand the tree line doesn't because the sky is so dull and boring, had this been a strong stormy sky the image would have been much better, try a dramatic adjustment of levels to the sky and see the difference.

I'm not mad about either of these as stand alone pictures, to be honest.

I took the dafs because (although I love them) they were planted in this sad bedraggled line along the bottom of a very dull fence with no artifice or guile.

The second one on the hills just kind of jumped out at me this afternoon because I still had the composition of the dafs photo in mind. The very dull sky is actually essential if the two pictures are to work as a pair. Sky=fence. Dafs=trees.

Must go back on the hill another day when the sky is full of huge, billowy clouds...

Thnaks for looking and commenting, gents,

I like the second one but maybe the contrast could be upped a bit. Do I see some sensor muck have way down towards the left?

Very nice indeed.

Thanks, Ken.

I've always dreaded muck on the sensor. It's inevitable, I suppose, the number of times I change lenses and, of course, the extreme age of most of my lenses! It would show-up on a sky like this.

How do you deal with it?

I think that would add a certain something, and I would go for the one on it's own on the right.
If you can't say something nice about Pentax, you won't say anything at all.

Apparently.

Like this, you mean, Robbie?

I'm not sure. I really don't want to make the photo too good, if you know what I mean. It would be the same if the sky was was "interesting" in the other one. In a way, it was the repetitiveness and monotony that made me look twice at each then connect them!

(Yeah, weird, I know!)

I don't like that version - the trumpets of the other daffs are now just dull flat grey blobs - they are not defined at all.

I know, techno, that's why I popped the colour in the first place: yellow is a weird colour when you convert to B/W, they get lost in the boring grey of the fence. I know I wanted the fence to be boring but even so... there are limits!

Thanks for looking and commenting.

I, too, prefer the first daffodil image, in the second I'd lost the heads until techno pointed them out. I like my daffs

I think the originals were great as first presented. They also work well together.
I do think the idea has been lost on some.

'Spring in the suburbs' works brilliantly for me.
Not sure 'Hedgerow' is the best title for the second one.
How about 'March on the hill'?

Howard, of course you would love daffs! (And the odd well boiled leek, probably.) Hope Gareth doesn't see this!

March on the Hill it is, Bob.

I'm not sure I explained clearly what I was trying to do. I'd hate folks to think I was presenting these as best examples of my work! It was only the idea and the very simple composition with which I was concerned. (But you knew that.)

Thank you both.

Andrew

Oh, you explained it fine Andrew I just didn't know what to say apart from simply agreeing with you, so I critiqued the photo I wasn't so keen on (there was nothing to improve in the other one!)

About the BW daffs, I don't quite understand why they went grey. When I convert your first image I get white daffs with both a straight conversion and red/orange/yellow/green filter conversions, and black daffs with a blue filter one. This is an orange filter BW conversion of your first shot in Aperture:
