A praise for the MX

It was always a pleasure to disappear for a day into the darkroom - I couldn't even contemplate spending the time these days.

But there is no substitute for printing your own images, be it silver prints or inkjets.

I have it!
Found an MX plus a Praktica BCA and a couple of lenses for a decent price.
The MX seems to be in good condition no dents some brassing, so far eveything works but I dont like the sight of those light seals. Fortunately those are easily fixed.
I'm surprised by the price some MXs with non working meters can go for.
Is there a way to check if the seals are ok, ie not affecting the film? Or is the only way by putting a film through?

With the photog society I have access to a lab. I've already had a tutorial on BW. I'm now looking forward to doing my first mistakes so I can finally make my own prints under the amazing scent of the developer

Got another MX btw... I never thought I'd get it cuz I bid and forgot, but I won... Now lets see which one is better.
Like buses, when you want one you have to wait forever and then a bunch come together. I also noticed some lower prices on MXs lately, I had seen MXs clearly not working going for £30+ and now some supposed to be working (condition?) went for less than that? Strange market behaviour.

I was talking to David Leung on the coach to Focus on sunday and he says he has 30 Pentax MX's in Stock ! I bought my MX and ME Super off him in 1986 together with a 120mm f2.8 Pentax-M lens and my ex-wife went off with that lens! e-mail : [email protected] and phone: 0208 590 3268 or 8599 0r 6657 mention Peter Elgar

I've been entertaining the idea of getting a fully mechanical SLR for some time. A bit of research and the MX was quickly the solution for me: small but sturdy, has specs but is fully mechanical, lots of praise for it.
.
I'm also looking at an MX, with a view to buying it. It is a bit pricy (here in Oz), but we'll see. Much depends on the condition. I also have a recently obtained KX, which is very good (and was super cheap!)

I see you've got your's already: what are your early impressions?

I like it alot! But I do feel that these smaller bodies are more well suited for smaller lenses. I got a Vivitar 28-90mm which is heavy-ish, but haven't tried it yet, lets see.

Warning if you wear glasses: the bare view-finder is not suitable for use with them.

I'm currently shooting with the MX I'm intending to sell. I want to make sure the film comes out right.

Oh yes it is! It's what I've been using for the past, er, some years, and it's not a problem.

Why do you find it unsuitable?

I wear glasses and I find the viewfinder on the MX just fine

I have no problems with the MX viewfinder and glasses. Used it for years.

Because I'm afraid of scratching my glasses against it. And if you back out a bit, you can't see the whole screen.

Side note: Just noticed that I'm a "pentax master" now... I feel embarassed, I have to watch what I say, being a master and all

Ah, I see. It's never actually been a problem, so I hope that reassures you. It doesn't even damage the coating on my Carl Zeiss Umbramatic lenses.

No problem here with glasses either, the ones on my face don't seem to scratch on the MX view finder. Or any other for that matter.

The one on the desk is empty and just about to be refilled!

I only came to the MX party last year and I have to say I'm very pleased I did! Lovely camera to use and there's something about all-mechanical designs that inspires faith in their longevity, like a well-made Swiss watch
Yes, I viewed one last weekend, and it is a very attractive item.

However, the aesthetic condition of the particular example on offer was somewhat below average, and I will just have to wait until a better one comes along.

There was, however, an ME Super though....

I like the ME Super but it's not *quite* the same feeling as the MX. The MES has an electronically controlled metal shutter compared to the all-mechanical cloth shutter on the MX; there's something in the feel of the MX when you push the button that's just nicer somehow. It's the little things like that that make the difference for me.

Keep searching and one will come to you sooner or later
