Well done Dr Mhuni for a good analysis of each entry and also actually getting an Internet connection!

Prieni's is an excellent shot in all ways and a worthy winner. For some reason I don't think anyone found this an easy subject when you'd have thought it would have offered a lot of freedom.

Regarding my own entry ? To get this kind of shots, you simply have to be in a area were there is little or now light pollution.
In my case this was the only subject that came close to those circumstances. It is indeed a ugly structure, but hey....Sometimes you just have to take what is presented, right?

winning again, wow. I too was happy to see more entries come in, even if they came in a bit late. And it wasn't just making up numbers, there were fine entries to be seen, I liked most of them. So I wasn't expecting this.

You are right, this is the same harbour light. It's one of my favourite subjects for evening shots as it is in walking distance (I can see the lights from our flat) so it lends itself for an evening stroll.

I did lighten up the right hand side a bit and toned down the left. But I think it's mainly the bright harbour light that balances the lighter sky on the left.
It was the original idea to have more of the stones in the frame and the stones 'sinking' into the smoky water. Alas, there weren't any waves to create that smoky water effect in a long exposure. This would, of course, have asked for a different composition.

Well, I have to ponder a new theme now...

Life is not easy at the moment and I need to be asleep when it is truly dark, although the interior shots did demonstrate that you did not necessarily have to be outside.

There was nothing serene about my shot, I can tell you! This shot, one of the first, was the only one where Molly actually looked at the book! I had a 5 year old holding the softbox on the floor and bending it down to see over it, and a 4 year old desperate to be in the shot. It was 4pm so they just wanted to go mad

Interesting point about the dark bit, I'll try cropping that a bit more.

I wonder if people think the added noise was a success?

Crippen - you like to make life tough with assistants under 6. Train 'em young I suppose and they'll be useful later on.

I actually thought mine was a bit weak, it was a last minute attempt and I didn't give it my full attention. I will have a go at cleaning it up a bit as you suggest.

I think this is one of the strengths of this competition, we are all encouraged to try that little bit harder.

Or in my case a lot harder!

Congratualtions to Prieni. This was my favourite too, followed very closely by Darkmunk.


I hope to be able to take part in the competitions again soon, now that the DIY is coming to an end. As Peter says, they do force you ( well, me ) to try harder and focus ( forgive the pun )on the subject in question.

Maybe this will spur me on to have another go, but with a tripod and more care - probably ruin it completely .

Yes, classy shot Prieni, congratulations! I must get out and try some long exposure work.
Doc, my earthy look was the application of a couple of texture layers which lent the vignetting, but the lighting was for night time!

I'm convinced it's a similar problem to that with Amoringello's, as it has failed to appear again now. Not sure what it is. Most likely explanation might be something to do with the site on which the image is hosted - but it's still odd. Which site do you use?
