hi all, been buying the monthly mags and have recently spotted somtething very exciting. the 10 stop ND filter for landscapes. these look absolutely amazing and are capable of keeping the shutter open for upto an hour resulting in very dramatic effects. I MUST HAVE ONE!!!!. does anyone use these and can you recommend one (good brand) at a bargain as they are pretty pricey!!!
cheer all

The bargain option is to use welding glass (usually under £5) though you do have to arrange a mount (sticking a cokin adapter for your lens size on works well) and they have a strong green colour cast but this can be corrected. Some apparently can have flaws distorting the images but I've not seen this in any of the ones I've tried.

Welding glass comes in a range of shades, (from 6-15 but mainly found in 10-13) but any of the common ones should give a useful exposure increase. My shade 13 has enabled me to photograph the sun at 1/500s (f16 with a 200mm lens) even showing sun spots.

Great advice petrochemist!

This is something I've always wanted to do at some stage - (uber long daytime exposures) and after a quick search I can get a shade 13 piece of welding glass and a cokin adapter ring to stick it onto my Sigma 17-70.

And the price alltogether is £3.

Brilliant.

Apologies for this. Found someone using one of my flickr images without permission. As a result, I reloaded all my recent ones adding a copuright notice. Unfortunately in my haste I forgot that they'd be deleted here. The links attached to the pics still work though

You used the expression "Good Brand".
Try, Lee Filters, Tiffen and B + W.
Be careful with the square slot-in filter holder type, you can in some circumstances get light penetration to the side of the filter holder during very long exposures.
Not everything in life is Black & White, If only it were!
Kind Regards,
Rees

I have one of these from 7day shop:
link. From my very limited experience of them, need to be careful with flare, but are relatively cheap compared with Lee, Tiffen etc!

I like to think so, but I in truth I'm probably just a cheapskate. In any even the original Idea wasn't mine so I cant claim the glory here.

What's the best way of getting rid of the colour cast when using the BW 10 stopper ,I'm not very good using pse7 that I have .
Thanks
Sean
