'RAW + JPG' !?

The make it sound more stupid, in the RAW there is a JPG preview which there are ways to separate.
The JPG preview is created in the same way as a separate JPG.
One reason to shoot both if you don't plan to do PP on your photos, only on the ones that didn't end up so good.

It does sound as though it is not needed but I always wished it was on my original *istD. I put a comment to Pentax several years ago about it - maybe that was the catalyst. Once you get used to having them, you will start to find them useful. If you don't you can shoot RAW only or JPG only.
If I want to leave an interim set of images behind - I can just pull the JPGs off the card and then work on the RAW files later.
Or if I want to email a picture quickly - it is there.

I wish the button on the side of my K10 simply switched to RAW, that makes more sense to me !

If you have 200 images it will take some time to convert those to JPGs - assuming that you have processing software there. polchraine wrote:

I wish the button on the side of my K10 simply switched to RAW, that makes more sense to me !
Or connect phone to camera (with appropriate USB hub) and upload the JPG and send it. There is no way you would want to send a 16MB RAW file from your phone - but a 500kB JPG is easy and te receiving party does not need processing software.

PP = Post Processing
If you are happy with JPG and don't want to spend a lot of time behind the computer but want to have RAW to save the photos that weren't perfect.
You can shoot RAW + JPG and save the good JPG and use the RAW of the photos that aren't that good.

My JPGs are 2MB and the PEFs are 10MB, so less of a difference, but even so I wouldn't want to use my phone anyway ! If you're working away and have to report in with proof shots, and take the raws back to base later, then I take your point reporter by any chance ??

2MB JPGs are probably hi quality low compression **** versions. Shot a wedding for our best friends, and we shot RAW + JPEG.
RAW, obviously for us to PP with, the JPEG was set at 2MP. All the (1000+) JPEGS went on a memory card for the bride and groom to choose which shots they wanted. Once they chose the shots for the album, we pulled the best results out of the RAW files.
There are many other reasons to shoot both, but this example worked great for us!

Premium quality JPEGs from the K20D are more like 4-5MB, so the amount of compression is now relatively small.

I shoot RAW + JPEG (lowest size and quality) so that I can view the images on the camera. Back home I can then quickly browse through all the images on the laptop and decide which ones are worth processing properly from the RAW file.

Great idea - i'd been doing the same only using the highest quality JPEG, don't know why your idea to use the lowest settings never occurred to me before!

But if you shoot RAW without JPGs like I do you can still view the images on the camera, so I'm not sure if that is a good reason.
I didn't however know there was an embedded JPG inside the RAW, interesting tidbit Stefan.
As far as I know it is merely a convenience to save as both RAW and JPG. Sometimes, I suppose on those occasions when you get the exposure perfect to start with, you don't need to mess around with the RAW file. That doesn't happen to me very often

Surely u can do this with just raw files !? No need for jpg at all !! I shoot RAW + JPEG (lowest size and quality) so that I can view the images on the camera.

One OR the other fine ! but why both ??
When I import to LR2 it combines them as one entry anyway (I know u can import as separate items, if u wish), so why have both ?
Only reason I can work out is to able to see what's there with a jpg viewer (which can't view raw, of course).
