Cleaning electrical contacts on a Flashgun
I'd add some isopropanol for cleaning off the vinegar as otherwise it will leave a sticky and conducive residue.

What in the world is this "thing"?
It is a dust mite living on your sensor! I think it is a weather balloon really.

Depth of Field
Depth of field is what we are talking about. Depth of focus refers to the allowable error in the position of the film/sensor. If you have the same magnification you will have the same DOF regardless of lens. Of course, the perspective will be different as you will be a different distance from the...

Explanation of terms
f:stop is the actual physical opening of the lens, e.g. f:2 on a 50 mm. lens is 25 mm. Aperture value is generally the physical f:stop less the light loss due to lens extension, light absorption due to the glass, dispertion and diffraction due to internal reflection. In other words, apertur...

Iris cleaning
Hi Guys, I've been asked to clean an old lens for someone. It's a Domiplan 2.8/50 automatic lens. (M42) The glass is perfectly clear but the aperture iris sticks, and after a few "jiggles" i can get it to move - as if through treacle. Inspection of the blades (though either front or back l...

Iris cleaning
Firstly, as it's a Domiplan you have little to lose. These are commonplace on eBay, etc and rarely fetch more than £5-10 - if you were to completely destroy it then finding a replacement would be neither difficult nor expensive. The most effective way I've found of cleaning oily blades is Fairy L...

Iris cleaning
As a quick addendum; do not attempt to take the iris blades out to clean. They are little more than foil and will bend when touched - once bent they are write offs. When these lenses were made the blades were assembled on a special jig and dropped in as a complete unit - without the special jig you ...

Iris cleaning
Many of the Meyer lenses were designed intelligently; iow, a relative amateur can take them apart and put them back together again. I don't know the Domiplan but it may be that the iris will unscrew as a unit once you've unscrewed the rear cover. Once you've removed it, soak the unit in Ronsonol u...

Iris cleaning
One more: The blades are designed to run dry - the "oil" residue comes from the grease used on the helicoid which will deteriorate with age and run into the rest of the lens. Clean any remaining old grease from the helicoid with a tooth brush as you've got it in the bowl of soapy water - when you re...

Iris cleaning
So far I've managed to loosen the 3 small grub screws (Ithink its Locktite of maybe 40 years of muck) and the rear lens has dropped out. Not literally I can now see the back of the blades - not touched them in view of previous comments. I suspect the next stage is to separate the depth of fiel...

Iris cleaning
I can't be specific as I've never tried dismantling a Domiplan, but you're right insofar as force is never the way. As a general rule, when you get to a point where nothing else seems to come apart, turn the lens over and start from the other end. You'll probably find that once the front parts ar...

Iris cleaning
As a quick addendum; do not attempt to take the iris blades out to clean. Good advice - I have done it in the past and really wouldn't recommend it unless you have dexterity, patience and time in abundance! I did a Takumar 200/4 which failed to yield to being soaked in solvent. It took several hours...

Iris Cleaning - The final chapter (I hope)
First Thanks to all who offered advise on my previous topic "Iris Cleaning". I've now stripped and rebuilt the lens and am moderately happy with the results. The blades are not as "snappy" as I expected but moving freely at least. I suspect the return spring is a bit soft- not surpising after 40 od...

Iris Cleaning - The final chapter (I hope)
It sounds like a success to me! Domiplans always did have a very poor reputation for IQ (hence them being so cheap) so I think your results are very much in line with how the lens performed when it was new. I bet your friend will be chuffed anyway. :)

Iris Cleaning - The final chapter (I hope)
Thanks again Hefty - At least it is actually working now. Not as well as I had hoped, but as you said Domiplans always did have a very poor reputation for IQ I was a little puzzled by the tapered image particulary as I spent ages squaring everything up - I wonder if it's because I dropped out the b...

Iris Cleaning - The final chapter (I hope)
That is a possibility, but I wouldn't waste too much time trying to make a silk purse from a sow's ear if I were you - a Domiplan is never going to be winning awards for fidelity. Assuming your friend's camera is an M42 mount then there are a couple of other lenses out there, that can be had for ...

Iris Cleaning - The final chapter (I hope)
Takumar 55mm f/1.8 That was the lens fitted to one of my first SLRs (a Pentax, but I can't remember the model). It was second hand in the early 70's as I recall and I took it everywhere. I only gave it away some years ago when I had a DSLR for my 60th as it was only collecting dust. I didn't think i...
