I use the Canon pixma 4700 for A4 prints and it is very good. There is a review here of the one your interested in. Seems like an excellent printer for A3 size images.

I've in recent years used Digital Revolution chipped replacements in my A4 Canon iP4500.

I've never been sold on buying a set of cartridges as dear as my printer!

Excellent product from ink.co.uk. They also have Swiss ink German engineered dearer ones that are still a bargain compared to Canon ones.

The iX6550 is listed. They also sell their own (and soetimes branded) paper which is all from Agfa. Again excellent for those of us who don't have money to burn!

Canon printers are excellent, having previously owned several other brands I bought the Canon all-in-one MP540 a while ago and with original ink (bought from 7 Day Shop) and Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl paper it produces excellent results

Thanks for all the suggestions for paper etc. I've also clicked on the links in your posts and the photographs are all fantastic. We must visit Wales again sometime as we has a photographic disaster last time. Long story.

"If I was a rich man tra lah lah etc"

Why not get a self propelled "Cherry Picker" I believe they come for various heights. Handy for seeing what the neighbours are up to as well

Quality costs money.

It all depends on where the individual's quest for quality ends before the wallet runs out.

However, original manufacturer's inks usually give the best results and good quality papers also usually give the best results.
.
I've taken the plunge and gone for the canon ix6550. I didn't think the reviews were too bad and will only use canon ink and paper to start with. The other half uses an Epson A4 and "other" inks which so far have been ok for her handicrafts, card printing etc. and 3 of my "Best" snaps which weren't totally panned in the local club

Think my photography budget stands alongside the Greek deficit at the moment

interesting ebay topic which i will comment on.
I do sell on ebay, but for the first time about 2 weeks ago i sold outside of ebay (no one had bid on my item though so technically i didnt piss anyone off).
Regarding ebay, I think by paying the couple of quid to post the ad they already make some money here. If the item does sell through ebay it does make sense for ebay to take 10%, as they have a rating system + will secure any dodgy transaction by protection both seller and buyer.
I love ebay and I think it's fair.

FYI the french ebay has a "petites annonces", basically free classified, no fees at all. I put my laptop on it at a decent price and have received about 25 dodgy emails (people who can't spell nor speak the language nor have the same name as their email address!). Basically the same as Gumtree now...
I have bought a laptop via Gumtree under the following conditions

The vendor was available by telephone and within driving distance so I got a bargain.

The rating system is usually ok on chinesebay although by the amount of negatives some have I fail to see how they are still in business

CANON PIXMA iX6550 A3 Colour Inkjet Printer. The price of this printer sounds quite reasonable and the cost of ink not too bad either but, is it a "good" photo printer. Anyone already got this or used one? At the moment its on my list of possible birthday gifts. Any recommendations for other similarly priced.

I've given up driving as it's a lot less stress for all concerned if the Financial Controller drives, I'm a good passenger, she is not.

you pay to sell in an auction house so why should ebay be different
I think most auction houses charge a sellers commission and there is a buyers commission to off-set part of this which can be off-putting. Rather like when things are for sale on here but you pay a buyers commission ie paypal fees for the seller.
