I also had the 12-24 and it was certainly sharp all over and very little lens distortion (especially compared to the sigma 10-20). It's a superb lens if you can afford it!

Got rid of mine (:cry, but I found the 40mm XS a perfect companion. I also loved using a Sigma 28mm Mini-wide II, or Sigma 24mm Super-wide II - focus peaking worked a treat and is one of the best bits! In fact, I often went around with just the 40 and one of the other two. Zooms, as you have noted, seemed to defeat the object. (The only reason I don't do this now is that I bought a K-5 and a "serious" compact satisfies my light-travel needs.)

Right, this is my last attempt.

Going back to this WA photo link
It's obvious due to the extreme WA distortion you can't crop it
and get a Tele view. If you crop off just a hand, the fingers are
bigger than the thumb. You could also use a smaller cropped format
and capture just say the hand and it would show the same distortion
which confirms that it is the lens that causes the perspective.

What everyone is saying is that if you took a telephoto shot FROM THE SAME POSITION then it would show the same perspective, albeit with a tiny amount of the picture, assuming you could focus that close.

Over and out.

OK, I feel a bit guilty as I started this, but Algi you are wrong. Look at the photos I took. Look at your sketches and spot the basic error of geometry (how can they be the same lines if they are at different angles?) All your examples have one thing in common - the photographer moved. (As an aside, I do explain to my son that the second best tool for a tog is his/her feet.)

Can this end now please?

It matters if we want to understand what we are doing. My main concern is that we shouldn't mislead anyone who is genuinely trying to get to grips with something.
Indeed and thanks. For a few years now I've watched the occasional arguments (50mm is the same as 75mm, no it isn't, yes it is, ad nauseum) and never really understood exactly what the answer was. I can see much clearer now (pun intended ) and understand better why I didn't get the same result from my Pentax 50mm 1.7 as I did from my Olympus OM10 50mm 1.8.

OK, am I thinking of sensor size then? I.e. dof for any given lens on APS-C is greater at a specific aperture than the full-frame?
