Really enjoying using the K5 at the moment but it's just started to freeze all the buttons and LCD after taking a shot, it has to be turned off and on again to get it back to normal has anyone elese had this?

thanks

The Sigma 17-70 (non-hsm version) is the first "upgraded" lens I bought for my K10D a couple of years ago - I replaced it 18months ago with the Pentax DA17-70.

My comments are based on the old version of the sigma which I believe is the same optically as the new one:

Sharpness - no major/noticeable difference between Sigma/Pentax, both are excellent, both need stopping down slightly (F5.6) to get the best from the corners although I think they are still acceptable wide open.

Contrast - this is why I prefer the Pentax, personally I find it is much better in this respect

colour - this can be a personal thing but again I very much prefer the Pentax here, nicer colour rendition IMHO

Distortion - the Pentax probably has slightly more distortion at 17mm than the Sigma but in real world photos I've nearly really had any issues with either

I can't comment on focus speed etc on the newer Sigma - the Pentax is fast and quiet. One or two people have mentioned that the Pentax has difficulty locking focus at 70mm in low-light which I've experienced a couple of times myself, 99% of the time my copy is fine

Hope this helps

I have the 12-24 UWA which originally I bought for my landscape photography - I've actually found that I use it more for holidays/travel though as I find it's often just too wide for the landscape scenes I like to shoot

It's available with Elements 9, too. Version 6.4.1.
Lightroom use ACR aswell.

Does LR3 allow "actions" to be used Stefan - I have quite a few set up in photoshop to speed up the workflow?
Lightroom is different to photoshop, the stuff you've with ACR you also have in lightroom to edit with but not much if any more.
You don't really have actions they more come down to presets and you can make your own.

Here you can download presets to give you an idea.

Lightroom replace ACR in your workflow with photoshop and adds to that also a catalogue system and a print module, so basicly you can manage your photos with lightroom, it also opens PSD.

Most of the edits i do with the photo are now done in lightroom only if i need to do a bit more, i go into photoshop.
LR works quite fast compared to PS, it just much more convenient it's ACR and bridge build into one.
Thanks for that Stefan - by the sound of it I think I'll stick with ACR/Photoshop

Surely you only have layers once you leave ACR though? By then the fill light has done it's job and acted as a fill light.
Yes you don't have layers in ACR but in the newest ACR and lightroom you can apply adjustment selectively.
I'm using CS4 so don't have the ability to tweak fill in ACR - 2 option I guess, either stick with shadows in photoshop or upgrade to CS5

Hi Chris,

I use fill light, especially now I have the K5, but am starting to move more towards "shadows" in photoshop - the problem I find with fill is that there isn't enough control and it lifts areas of the photo that i don't want it too, the shadows option has much more fine tuning control.

No 1 for me too although I don't think 2 is particularly over done - most of the time I'm not a massive fan of HDR but having used it myself a few times recently. I definitely think it has its uses, others seem to agree too as a couple of photographs I've recently processed by HDR are actually selling well so if only for that reason I'll be pursuing it further

I continue to read threads on the 18-135 as it's an excellent focal range and the WR is an attraction - for my intended use corner softness etc as mentioned in the reviews could be an issue though as I do print up to 36x24 inch and have concerns how the prints may appear. Has anyone printed large photographs as yet with the 18-135 and could add some comments?

I wonder if your crop has a touch too much sky Simon?
Think if you cut the top by a third it might give the composition a better balance, thus making the Abbey more the centre of attention?

Davex.
Yes I think this too Dave - keeping the aspect ratio and also not wanting to crop below the abbey limits how much sky I can lose though, I'll give it a try.
