Herons are easy in that part of London.

Trying to get a good shot of one of the parrots is much harder in my view:

For Herons there is almost always one fishing under Richmond bridge until around 7:30am at weekends. Otherwise closer to Teddington Bushy Park is the place to go.

if no protection is required, why still hang on to the letters of a rule when the reason why it has been put into place does not apply in this case?
Well the glib answer is because it is a rule.

In fact the question of how normative standards or rules evolve is actually a philosophical question I find deeply interesting.

But it doesn’t really apply here; the apparent calls for some kind of realtime democratic decision making process contain not the path to nirvana but the seeds of constant bickering, anarchy, and what not. It is simply not practical on an internet forum.

That is not to say that the existing rules represent perfection or an ideal state; but the way to change them is not via a hysterical outburst and hissy fit, but to be argue for change within the context of existing rules.

Or in fact cynically manipulative.

Would it be at all an option to ask Tim for permission to have any communication to be disclosed?

If Tim does not agree to have any of his (private) messages published verbatim, maybe he will agree to have the general gist of them published?

If Tim agreed, I think that would lead to a very good outcome as everyone interested in the matter could judge for themselves whether the (temporary) banning was justified.

I have already suggested this and had an email from Tim saying he would be happy for the PM's that were sent to John to be published on the forum for everyone to see.
Tim knows very well that JR/PU's position has always been that PMs must remain private. So should you.

Do I understand correctly that he now also wants this rule broken along with his other transgressions of customary behaviour here?

This is simply farcical.

In my view the most depressing thing about this thread is that the many posts have so far failed to produce any kind of catharsis; instead there has largely been a continuous rehash of well trodden positions.

The way I see it this whole sorry episode has been the climactic conclusion of fairly persistent sniping and whinging about various aspects of moderation in recent weeks. As a testament to the thankless nature of that task, this has not only come from opposite sides of the same arguments but in certain quarters has also been carried out with the tedious enthusiasm of a bunch of old wimmin.

To the extent I have paid attention prior to current events, at the periphery there was nevertheless one complaint I have some sympathy with; a lack of clarity regarding suitable content for the “general chat” section, and the perhaps occasionally arbitrary nature of material deemed inappropriate.

It seems to me that a positive outcome of this process might be to review that board’s strapline “Area for open chat”, and if appropriate change it - or even the ToS - to something that reflects PU’s official position, as a guide for posters and moderators alike, in the case of the latter naturally always subject to standards of taste, etc..

How about that John?

FWIW. I happened to see the offending post; I obviously don’t recall every word, but there is no doubt that Tim’s blog statement that it “contained nothing but a link to . . . a ‘Mario Brothers’ . . .photography idea” does not correspond with the facts. In other words that is a lie.

Sure there was that, but this was incidental to the lion’s share of the post, comprising a few sentences of snide, general whining about moderation, followed by an explicit taunt in effect daring JR to remove the post.

Why would he taunt JR like that?

Clearly Tim was previously miffed at some aspect of moderation, and has now succeeded spectacularly in transferring this and more to very many members; by accident or design, I wonder?

I can't see the point or the target market of this camera.

It has the Image Quality of a £200 camera yet costs £600 without the added extras.
Therein lies the genius of marketing, assuming of course it continues to sell.

However (and OT), what has me totally gobsmacked is the depths to which the K5/Kr have plunged in those Japanese retail rankings; granted a week is a short period but that is very disconcerting indeed.

Makes me think the rumours of a new dslr class body are true- - they’ve got to pull something out of the bag!

the Nikon d7000 sensor stains. . . They have not acknowledged it (afaik) but are just quietly and quickly replacing or fixing.
If that is true, they are doing it so quietly that a Google search for “Nikon D7000 sensor stain” reveals no pertinent hits certainly up to a depth I can be bothered reading to.

Like Gwyn I have never heard that sensor staining is a problem affecting the Nikon D7000, which uses the same sensor as the K5; do you have any source or link supporting your assertion? (the link you posted a) is incomprehensible and b) doesn’t resemble the K5 staining pattern at all)
