If you buy a monitor tested by TFT Central you can download and
use their calibrated profile which will be a lot better than
the factory settings.

Indeed DVI will be used (well, apple display port -> DVI adapter).
Would love to have a screen with a greater color gamut than sRGB, but like Anvh said, it'll cost me. So I'm fine sacrificing that for now to keep things cheaper.

Until now I've only used the glossy LCD of my macbook pro, and although after calibration the colors are pretty good, I don't like the the extra punchyness that the glossy screen gives it (seems like the contrast and saturation are amped up when compared side by side to a calibrated apple cinema HD). Need something a bit more faithful to edit on.
thanks a bunch for any suggestions!

Why not rent one from SRS?

Maybe if you do a lot of macro work, then I'd use a dedicated macro lens and go 15, 35ltd & 77. That would be a pretty sweet combo and tiny to boot. In fact if i didn't need the speed of the 43, i'd probably have a 35ltd.

I recently acquired a K-135 f/2.5 which is the same way. 58mm filter size, but steps down to 49mm no problem.
don't sell the 31 just because it uses 58mm filters! I feel you on the size though, that was my issue with it...

I think it's one of those natural progressions that every digital photographer goes through. You start of shooting JPEG because you can't be asked to learn all the ins and outs of raw processing. Then eventually you start running into the limitations of JPEG and you switch over to RAW. Or alternatively you turn into a sports/news/some-other-prolific shooter and you don't have the time to deal with processing so you stick with JPEG, but at least you know why you're doing so.
RAW is great, but if you're not going to take advantages of the flexibility it affords you, then it's just a waste of time and storage. IMO the image quality difference is not worth the effort between an in-camera JPEG and one that gets spit out of your processor of choice, it's the exposure latitude, white balance correction, etc... that makes it worth the effort.
