It is a dilemma, but if you already have FF compatible lenses then not quite so. If like me you had to consider buying new lenses to suit the K1 then it is sensible to investigate the field as effectively you are buying into a whole new system. It is difficult because after enthusiastic new launches the shortcomings start to emerge and punters start hoping these will be fixed in the next upgrade; Sony in particular seem to suffer from this as they rush out new models to stay ahead.

No-one can predict the future as no doubt many Canon and Nikon users feel who bought in before emergence of mirrorless with new mounts. Pentax Rumours has a recent article where someone asked Ricoh if there were any new cameras coming out in 2019 and the response was in the negative. But at least you know what to expect with the K1 II.

Thanks folks, I was given the chillies by a friend who grew them on an allotment; they were quite small so I livened up a prawn risotto with two. The consensus was one would have been enough! I still have a few left the family are delighted to hear. Gloves sounds a good plan Gwyn.

Are you sure? I just grabbed the nearest tube of cream, I think it was moisturiser! Did the trick though.

Here’s a tip for the male chefs out there: after chopping up chilli peppers don’t scratch your nether regions afterwards. Aaaargh!

I do like the 15-30mm but after investing heavily in 100mm filters then it's a no go for me.

Interesting about that sharpness comment, that's thrown a curve ball of thought about the 2 lenses and what to do!

Best do a quick online comparison of the 2 lenses and sharpness before shipping my lenses off to them
I'm not convinced that the 28-105 is sharper, it's a good all-rounder but the 24-70 is what I take when I want to get the best, and of course it is f2.8 all the way up. As for filters I bought the Lee Filters SW150 after getting the 15-30 but have come to realise it is rather limiting; the collar, mount and large filters take a lot of room and the adapters for other lenses have quite bulky sleeves which partly cover the lens barrel so you wouldn't want more than one or two whereas the SW100 system looks much more manageable, and I am wondering if I should have opted for that instead as it would unrealistic to buy and carry both systems.

Here is a thought - how about a couple of primes instead of swopping your 28-105? I have taken to carrying these now for lightness and much sharper results and I have been surprised at how little the fixed focal length has been a problem.

Richandfleur, over here at least the electrical chain stores only stock entry and low cost models from the main manufacturers, a market Pentax seems to have moved on from, so I don’t think that in itself is significant. Only when you look at other brands do you realise that they excel in certain things but compared to Pentax are deficient in others.

A Ricoh executive said that they have no plans for mirrorless and are concentrating on the DSLR market and that makes some sense for APS-C and FF bodies but is the death knell for MF due to size and weight. Having pioneered the MF market with portable bodies Pentax has done nothing since and seen mirrorless bodies take their lead. The guy also said they expect a move back to DSLR from mirrorless by disaffected users and there are a few instances of that but nothing compared to the flow in the opposite direction, as we cannot all afford to keep swopping whole systems. They may be right to become more niche, but to be successful with that approach they have to be the absolute best and make DSLRs unique in some way such as reliability in all conditions. Pentax’s biggest hurdle is the perception in the photographic community that they are done for and have been trading for too long on their historic reputation. Until they can change that no one is going to buy their products no matter how good they are.

You're missing the main one for most of the members of this board: Doesn't have Pentax written on it.

It seems to me that most complaints come from people who have almost decided that Pentax is no longer for them , but cannot quite make their minds up.

I cannot for the life of me understand why they are waiting.
I hope you didn’t misunderstand me, if Pentax continues I am more than happy to stay with it as I haven’t seen anything worth switching to for what I do and I like the kit. I am just holding fire on further expenditure whilst I see how things pan out. As for the red dot, I admit to having succumbed!

Loyalty is to an extent looking after your own interests, after all the advice glibly given of changing systems doesn’t compare to insurance policies or single items. I am sure camera bodies are almost loss leaders as once you have bought into a brand you keep buying stuff; most of us have a range of lenses and accessories which cost a lot more than the camera itself and probably accumulated over several years. Replacing them is a huge financial hit especially if there is no longer a market for them and which would be unnecessary if Pentax stays in business unless you choose to for other reasons.

Sorry if I sounded a bit gloomy, it was gone midnight and I should have been in bed. Jak is right on many points but unlike 35mm cameras DSLRs have a limited life so at some point will need replacing. And I have started using prime lenses more so there is scope for a couple which is where I am saving more weight than just going mirrorless would. But Jak we live in a commercial world and stagnation doesn’t send out positive signals as well as limiting appeal to new buyers.

Sigma ceasing production of K mounts isn’t a surprise as none of their new lenses for the last three years have the option, and demand for their older lenses is bound to be falling off anyway. Instead they are capitalising on the growth of Sony and the other mirrorless systems where there are large gaps in the native line ups.

Further to the above I have just watched the embarrassingly low budget 1 minute anniversary video. It stops with the K1 II in 2018!
