Hmm, I paid €48 in September, that's $56 at today's rates. I have over 5000 images there so I suppose I'm tied to it. I need to start making use of it as cloud storage to get my full money's worth but need to find the best way to separate what I want to share from what I only want to back up.

You can select the privacy level for each photo - public, friends and family, or private, which is what I do for family photos. I think this can be done using albums as well.

I really use it mostly for storage and posting the odd photo and there are cheaper solutions out there I'm sure. Just seems a shame as I have been a member since around 2010 and they seem to be pricing themselves higher than their worth (to me anyway and I rarely change anything unless absolutely necessary)
The new Flickr management realised that they were running at a loss as the site wasn’t conceived as a cloud storage site but that is what many used it for, so I guess that is the reason for incremental increases.

I just checked Dropbox, it is £95.88/year for 2 TB and double that for 3 TB, so unless you do a lot of sharing in comparison Flickr is good value. Smugmug is about £8/month for unlimited and for that you get a basic website as well but like Flickr is photos only. For my work files and folders I use Apple iCloud at £2.50/month and there is probably room there for some photos as well but I just rely on a couple of hard drives instead. I guess these cloud storage sites are aimed at pro and semi-pro photographers for whom the cost would be tax deductible and very damaging if they lose photos but if this is just a hobby then I agree it is a stretch.

I take it that is for unlimited cloud storage, otherwise it is still free for up to 1000 images. I don’t know how it compares with other cloud storage facilities but I would have thought one which also backs up documents and files would be more useful at that price level.

Apologies from the outset as this isn’t directly related to Pentax but I think it is a useful lesson nonetheless. My favourite bird photographer is Arthur Morris, who for years was a Canon Master of Light, a prestigious title which meant they funded his exhibitions and lectures and in return he promoted the brand and gave demos using their kit. His remarkable photos involved the most expensive bodies and premium telephoto lenses coupled with stacked teleconverters. About three years ago Canon dropped him without explanation following a change in the brand’s marketing strategy, and which coincided with a time when he was becoming frustrated at Canon’s lack of technical developments being seen at other companies.

He switched to Nikon for their better motion tracking and greater number of megapixels, spending an eye-watering amount on kit to match his previous setup. All was going swimmingly until he was appalled to discover that off-centre focal points didn’t work at all with teleconverters attached. He has since repeated the exercise and switched to Sony.

Not many of us could take the massive financial hit of doing this once let alone twice, but it does bring home the lesson that things are not always what they are claimed to be in this business.

I cannot argue with his opinion of the Pentax CEO’s announcement and presentations though, his latest demo of the still forthcoming camera is toe-curlingly embarrassing. They should really drop this amateurish style, it underlines the impression of a company being run on a shoestring and certainly doesn’t reassure me that the brand has a sound future. Perhaps no-one at the company dares tell the boss!

Yes, lovely shots with that reflected colour. I wonder though whether they are a tad on the cool side? I find sometimes in low light the auto white balance is cooler than I remember so have to adjust it later.

What a shame, no doubt the chimps were seriously pissed off with being incarcerated.

That’s awful Gwyn, I get that shooting an animal could be justified if it is actually in the act of endangering a human and there is no other option but that cannot be so otherwise. Doing so is the coward’s way of avoiding accountability if the worst happens. We know chimps can be dangerous but there have been numerous instances where animals have confounded their preconceived behaviours; think of the gorilla that carefully helped a small child who had fallen into his pit and narrowly avoided being shot as a result (the gorilla not the child).

Does anyone else have mixed feelings about the culling of minks in Denmark? Apparently with 17 million of them in farms Denmark is the world’s largest exporter of mink furs, who knew that was still going on? A staggering number which must be crammed together in factory farms they are apparently the source of twelve Covid infections in humans, so every one of them must be killed (the minks that is, not the humans). I guess they would be killed anyway which goes against my overriding principle that every living thing has a right to its life even I f born in the wrong place, and killing even if thought necessary due to human meddling and farming practices is unsupportable.

I just hope that some idiots don’t decide to release them into the wild to cause havoc with native species, and that the Danish government bans these farms permanently before they have the chance to re-stock.

I agree with Kris here. To consign b+w images to a kind of "second division" which only work if the colour does not, is to misunderstand b+w photography completely.
That was the point I was making in my clumsy fashion - the time to decide whether a photo should be in b+w or colour is ideally before you press the shutter. For example I recently had occasion to take some snaps from the street finding shapes of letters so I preset my camera to b+w and square crop as I needed to emphasise shapes, which I knew would be less effectively done in colour.
