Thanks guys is a page full of reviews of camera traps. They aren't cheap. An IR remote needs filed of sight of the camera to work. Depending on the model camera you have sensors front and rear or rear only. The range of the IR remote varies depending on the model. The Pentax remote F has a working distance of about 5 metres. Edit: K-x only has a remote sensor at the back - which restricts your use of it quite a bit.not interested in camera traps mate just with the camera (k-x) five metre range then from the back?

Hi As some are aware bird photography and wildlife is my big thing that gets me out of the house most days and weekends. I always crave the "great" shot and will go hours just to get one moment on camera that I am happy with. For instance my latest photograph (check flickr thing below)took me over two hours to get and I had to lie in a river to get it - a shot of a Dipper. I waited until the light was just perfect and the bird had caddisflies in its mouth - Very satisfied. However, I cant go on like this forever because I have other committments - family etc. Can anyone explain to me (in very simple terms) how the trap shot works? Have I got this term right? Its when you can set you camera up to fire off when something like a bird enters the frame. Any thoughts on how that works very appreciated. SECONDLY I was wondering how far the range on one of those remote IR shutters is for shooting cable release style. Can I set the camera up and hide somewhere and then simply press it or is there a range and direction on these things? MANY THANKS TO THOSE THAT READ AND ARE WILLING TO REPLY! Cheers QC

Is the K-5 Really Worth it????
Posted in Pentax Digital SLRs
Thanks everyone for the comprehensive replies. Im getting the impression that the K-r might be a better camera than I first thought. Those 6 fps would be very handy and I am assuming that it would yield better IQ. But then again I could just spend the extra and get the K-5? Its been said that I need to put good glass in front of the K-5 to get the best out of it. Can I assume the 300mm DA F4 on this camera would be the bees knees? MORE MONEY! :)

At the moment I am taking all my wildlife (mostly bird) shots with the Pentax K-x and Sigma 150 500. I understand the limitations that each have respectively... For example the lens works best at F8 (unless its nice and bright) The lens can hunt (but i sometime use manual to speed things up_ And the K-x which I now know inside out (can change aperature without even looking at the back of the camera to see if its finished buffering)and know that all its little quirks. I am often told that the images are great and I should upgrade to "better" equipment but what exactly? Is the K-5 really going to make my photos any better>? Obviously the shutter speed and zero buffering is a plus but its big money for someone who doesnt have much. Or alternatively do I sell the lot and buy the 400mm 5.6 Canon that everyone raves about and then save for a Canon body (Perish the thought!) A very confused bird photographer! QC

I am willing to spend in and around the 70-100 range but it would need to be a great model for the ton.

Hi folks I will have a little bit of cash to buy something in a couple of weeks. Money doesnt come my way very often so it has to be a good purchase. Having thought about it long enough I have decided to opt for something like a 28 or 35mm for general use and a little bit of macro work. It doesnt have to be a brand spank lens or even autofocus just something that will yield great results on my K-x. I know some people have already sent me pm's and messages on the subject but please remind me because I have lost all my messages. Thanks in advance! QC

An M50/1.7 is a no brainer, but beyond that you're going to need to be more specific about what you think you need. If general street stuff a zoom is a good way to go until you establish your shooting style and preferred focal length. For this the kit lens is fine, but 1) The Tamron 17-50mm is a bargain with near-stellar IQ (costs 250 quid or thereabouts s/h - if that sounds a lot, compare to the DA16-50mm!), or... 2) An F35-70mm would be a low-cost (35 quid?) 'pocket-sized' addition to your kit (and a decent range for 'street shooting with excellent IQ).Good man - will check those out! Quick question and a little embarassing:oops: Does 50mm equate to a different focal range with a digital camera? QC

Please help me. I am getting overwhelmed by the amount of lenses on the internet and cannot make up my mind. Perhaps someone can recommend one if I give you the low down? I believe people take photos, not the camera. Meaning that I am not a "gear hoe" and can happily snap away with any sort of equipment. I mostly shoot birds (have the sigma 150 500) but am interested in doing more general things - street, portrait, a bit of close up work... A general do all job that will fit nicely on my K-x I am also interested in some of the lenses that appear on ebay - manual ones. Can you recommend any of those> Thanks!
Upgrade from 120-400mm - sigma 150-500mm os worth it?
Posted in Lenses for Pentax Cameras
Martyn I use my 150 500 every day - on my lunch hour at work I take it with me and do my 20 minute walk capturing everything from birds to flowers. I have used the 120 400 and can assure you that there IS a difference in quality. Admitedly its still not hot as some primes wide open but on a sunny day the Sigma 150 500 IS as good as a Canon or Nikon F4 - I dont care what anyone will reply to that. Its a great lens and is too easily overlooked. Please check out my photos below on my Flickr account. All my bird shots are with the lens and the cherry blossom is with it as well. QC

Does anyone have any experience of using the Sigma 300mm macro? Most of my macro shots are done with the Sigma 150 500 and kit lenses and to date am quite happy with the results. I really want an all rounder lens and the 35 2,4 seems to fit the bill - a bit of macro on the side would be nice though!

My Sigma 150 500 is on the K-x virtually 95% of the time for bird photography (although I did shoot a floweriny bud the other day that looks nice with it) but would love to get myself a nice 35 or 50 for macro work and general use. I have read the reviews on the 35mm F2.4 and is nicely priced as well but I am willing to give something older a go that still sports good quality. Any thoughts on what I should do? Ta QC
