It always gives me a sense of excitement when you first start uploading the new firmware. Have I remembered to fully charge the battery, is the memory card ok that contains the firmware, will it make it to the end or give up half way and totally kill the camera.

If truth me known I often feel like turning the camera off halway through to see what happens but have resisted that particular urge ... so far
O thanks that realy fills me with confidence.

we're forever updating the software we put out onto the market.

Lots of reasons:
- Marketing wanted a date set
- we've tested like crazy but there's some strange but common combination we screw up with
- new improvements should be implemented
- mild changes to avoid incompatibilities which are rare but significant

... and that's without mentioning security bugs which are the number one reason you should update EVERYTHING on your computer on a *very* regular basis. It's no longer Windows, it's everything else that runs on the computer that's now the aim of the hackers.

The other point was this: the firmware was probably produced relatively early in the cycle. Only now has someone thoroughly tested the situations which were "real", i.e. there's been code improved with regard to the high ISO buffer limits. The limit was probably there with "justification" in a certain context, but in a photography context for the user the technically correct decision may make no sense.

As such, firmware updates should be greeted - not necessarily with enthusiasm, but certainly as a sign that the company gives a toss and is trying to ensure a good product is in the hands of their customers.

Its just a pitty everything could not be put toegther at the point of manufacture but I do relise this is not always possible from the feed back to the thread. I guess I am goung to just have to bite the bullet and give it a go.

Here is the announcement http://www.pentax.jp/english/news/announce/20101029.html

They somehow increased the number off frames in Continuous Hi burst from 8 to 20 PEF raw frames at ISO 100.
Lets hope that's true

They also updated the PEF codec for Windows and Mac.
They improved/updated;
- Support for the K-r and K-5 camera.
- Added [Bleach Bypass] mode on Custom Image function.
- Add [auto correction] on lens correction item
- Added lens data.
[smc PENTAX-DA 18-135mmF3.5-5.6ED AL[IF]DC WR]
[smc PENTAX-DA 35mmF2.4AL]
- Improved response of general performance.

Here is the codec, still not for 64bit though.
Windows
Mac

For the 645D there is some hinting for tethered shooting program.
Here is a babblefish translation.
"A remote-access application will soon to be added to this software,
allowing you to control your PC from a distance using the 645D."

I doubt you can control your PC with the 645D so lets assume it's the other way around for now

oh and if you want you can send your Km, Kx and/or Kr to Japan for a different grip colour
Km/Kx
Kr
Morning Stefan Im not realy up to speed with all this technology. My question is why cant manufactuers just make sure there cameras are equiped with these updates at the point of manufacture bearing in mind the K5 has only been on the market a few weeks at most.So there would not be the need for people to like myself who dont realy relish the thought of upgrading there camera for fear of making a total mess of things.
