It makes sense Ian but that doesn't guarantee it's on focus.
There are some margins build in the lens and the AF sensor of the camera so the tolerances aren't 100% meaning the lens might front or back focus.
I've checked my lenses and they all needed some correction to make them focus correctly with the AF sensor of the camera.
Live view works differently, it use the actually image to verify focus so it bypass all those tolerances by looking at the final image.

So to show the differences you're doing here, focus first with live view since that one is the most accurate and set the lens to MF so that the camera doesn't focus any more.
Then take a photo with live view and then one without live view while leaving the lens on MF, that should deal with the variation of the focus in your photos.
Thanks Stefan I will try your method out and see if there are any variation in the results.

Have you ever checked if your focus is spot on when using the viewfinder?

Hi Stefan what I normaly do is press the shutter button half way down a few times and wait for the bleep to make sure the focus does not vary, ie the lens does not shift from the point of origanal focus if that makes sence to you.

If it helps the clock was taken about 3 foot focus on the ctr winder. The garden photo focus point was on the left pillar at the front edge of the capping stone about 10 feet away.

Did you use the 2 second self timer to ensure lack of vibration?

There's no mirror slap anyway with Live View, so the difference just maybe could be down to that.
Hi John yes I did use the 2nd timer on the tripod for both however I did not cover the veiw finder eye peice.

I took these two test shots just now and wonderd if you could see any difference in the sharpness of the results. First taken through the veiw finder and second in live veiw.
