I was wondering when shooting night scenes. Is there any advantage of using a shutter release remote. Over the cameras in built self timmer. To open and close the shutter during the exposure.

I have been given a Manfrotatto tripod quite a a sturdy one. I now need to buy a suitable ball head. Prices seem to vary alot is it worth paying the extra for a brand name or are other options worth a consideration.
