Hi. Just had to say I've got a Pentax k500 which I've had for 2 yrs and been really happy with it. I've done a few courses with a pro who hated my Pentax and told me to get a Nikon d7000 which I've done( second hand). To be honest I think the Pentax has better colour depth and detail. The grass isn't always greener! Glad I kept the Pentax !

Well, the pro isn't the one using the camera - use whatever you're happy and comfortable with.

As for the Nikon D7000 it probably is (arguably) a step up from the K-500, but so are the Pentax K-5 and K-3 series!

I try to be very careful when people ask me what camera they should buy. After all, I know what suits me, but how am I to know what will suit them?
Best regards, John

It sounds ignorant to advise someone to switch DSLR system based on the experience of a single model in the range. It may be that there were valid limitations with the entry level K500 which the pro felt were restrictive. In that case the sensible and logical advice should be to identify what features are desirable and tell the student to look for them in a future camera upgrade . There's no doubt that a model further up the Pentax line would provide everything that was needed.

I don't understand why some reviewers keep making the point that the other systems have more lenses than Pentax. So what? You're not going to buy them all are you!?

There speaks a man without LBA!

Playing Devil's advocate (although I am more than happy with my Pentax bodies and various lenses) Nikon and Canon mounts do have many more third party accessories easily available (such as extension tubes)

Apart from that 99.9% of people would not find that buying Pentax placed any restriction on their photography

The k-5 is a far better camera than the d7000, I've owned both. As for accessories my third party grip and flash is causing major issues with my d750. Maybe Nikon are putting in measures to prevent third party accessories from functioning like Apple have done with the lightning connector.

My flash and grip work fine on my older d600 and it's not as if you can ask Nikon f they have any issues with third party manufactured products.

The one defect in the lens argument is that Pentax have just as many lenses as most other manufacturers - at least when we count the ones that are realistically available. They have considerably more lenses than some.

I sometimes think there's a danger that some reiterate old arguments without actually checking.

The traditional line of complaint is around not having higher spec models to grow into. As with the 'not enough lenses' line, this too falls flat as who is going to keep the original entry level kit lens when they upgrade from the entry level APS-C Canikon offering to a Canikon FF body?

I've long wanted Pentax to bring out a FF option, if for no other reason as to be taken seriously in this respect. Pentax probably have a better claim to this anyway, given the K-mount is fundamentally a FF mount also.

In my experience, the Pentax bodies represent better bang for your buck than equivalent price point models from Canikon. It's for this reason that Pentax needs to be realistic about where they price their new models too. Pricing high and then dropping quickly doesn't leave a good impression. It hurts reviews, because the camera gets pitched against higher spec competition, and it hurts Pentax supporters, who pay full whack for something that will drop in price shortly afterwards.

With regards to new users though, opting for Canikon does mean 99% of training videos etc out there will apply to their product. And Canon especially do a great job of new user support and training. They have whole websites set up for this. That aftersales support, training guides, new feature firmware updates etc is not something Pentax does particularly well.

The previous post from "richandfleur" , as always, is such a good perspective on this topic, but whilst I doubt it likely, I hope Ricoh / Pentax take note of what is being said and people in general reflect of the points in John Riley's earlier post too .

I am sometimes frustrated at the Pentax focus speed issue and the lack of specific lenses that 3rd parties offer to CaNikon, but then I try them out and more often than not get a little dissapointed at the optical performance and build quality compared to Pentax lenses.

It the same with bodies, Pentax cameras are extremely well engineered and I won't add the caveat "for the money" , they are well engineered by any standard.

I have also consider that the ergonomics and size of the Pentax Products are is a key point and the robustness of the Canon and Nikon prograde "muscle cameras" is more about style than functionality.

They are robust and well made for sure (Canon more than Nikon) but having recently suffered a horrendous " first time in my life moment" where I dropped a K 3 on to a flat stone grave, from waiste level, with a big lens attached, I was completely astounded to find it had no effect on operation of either the lens or the camera, which took quite an impact.

Despite the odd whinge from me I am very happy with Pentax and can't wait to try an FF which will have to be very good to leave the K3s behind APS OR NOT .

The point about after sales support and marketing has been well discussed on PU over time but still remains as the only is the only significant criticism that is justifiable from my point of view, and I think it is the only thing preventing the rise of Pentax back to it's former prestigious position, which is a commercial necessity in terms of development, innovation and evolving the technology going forward.

However, even that doesn't bother me that much because I feel quite good as the underdog on occasions, when winning a place in a competition at the camera club or working alongside pros at a sporting event, when someone says to me ; "you didn't take that with a Pentax did you"

Sometimes I have been known to reply, yes I did actually and I can see you took that with a Canon.

Couldn't agree more! The build quality, robustness (I have dropped several of my Pentax cameras, mostly with no affect, although my K20 did eventually bite the dust after a fall from shoulder height onto a concrete drive!) and ergonomics have always ben a major strength for me
