Thanks TTK,

I might do that this week. When I get it back I might sell my K200D if the 20D is as good as new

You will get closer with the 105mm, it's a dedicated 1:1 macro lens, the 70-300mm is 1:2 I believe.
I am really thick when it comes to technical stuff Thinking about going on a course.

I am still waiting for my K20D to come back from Pentax presuming that is who LCE sent it back to in April! Last I heard they said they were waiting for parts. LCE keep saying "Pentax said" so I guess that is who has had it for 10 weeks now.

If you could only have 5 lenses in your collection to use, which 5 would you choose, why and want would you sot with them (potraits, macros etc)

Jack,

Thanks for the advise. Your photos are amazing as well. The strange thing is I have a Sigma 105mm Macrolens that I find a lot easier to use! I seem to be able to get a lot closer with that. Away, todays last attempt

Thanks Martin,

I have looked at your website. You have some amazing pictures. I think I know which ones you have taken with the lens. I didn't think you could use it that close though or are they zoomed in? I will have another go and see If I can improve avoiding yellow and purple flowers and sunlight

Morning Martin,

Good night last night then!

Thanks for the feedback. They look awful then

Your not wrong though. I don't think it is the light or the lens I think its me! I seem to prefer working closer than this lens allows, or on super zoom. Just been out again to take some at 190mm and still don't like them. It is windy here though which doesn't help. May have to rethink this lens. I could do with seeing photos other people have taken to see just what it is capable of. Might forget photography for today my inability is making me depressed

Second attempt with new lens! These are taken on normal mode I think! Using MF with a tripod. Hopefully they are better? If not I may need to find somebody round here to help!

A: Only if you want to take excellent technically superb photos.

...If you are happy with average or rubbish, then by all means remain ignorant.
That is a little harse ! I consider myself a rank amateur when it comes to photography and have little technical knowledge, but I still receive many complements on some of my photos! Even with the little knowledge I have I don't always take average or rubbish. But the goods shots I take are through more luck than judgement and I believe these are the ones taken from my heart rather than my head. The harder I try to get the technically superb photos the worse they get. But the ones I take with passion seems to produce better results.

That doesn't mean that I don't want to have the technical knowledge and be the sort of photographer who can take superb photos by using the correct settings on the camera. I know a little about position and aperture and shutter speed but not much and I often forget what I learn unless I have the time and opportunity to practise, but often I find that for the type of photography I love (wildlife) you don't have the luxury of time to set up the perfect shot most of the time. But that doesn't mean I don't want to learn and improve.
So yes you do need the technical knowledge, but there is more to a good photo than just technical know how
