I read on the I/Net that Irfanview will run under Wine - apparently "straight out of the box". That would be perfect for what I want - a Flashtrax substitute.

Have you tried it?

Hi
Well done George for persevering

I am thinking I need to replace/upgrade my Flashtrax, and I have loosely thought this machine might do the trick.

Is there a simple piece of Linux software that will simply transfer and read .DNG files?

I have loaded Gimp under Windioze and it seems to be a bit too extensive for what I am looking for and so unloaded it. I cannot remember if it recognised .DNG files

It will probably work, BUT, TFT's produce terrible quality when used with another resolution then their native resolution.
When you play a game it is not so much a problem but when doing other tasks it is not very nice to look at.
To produce a lower resolution a TFT will simply group pixels together to one big pixel.

I think that finding a PCI graphics board will be quite difficult, most shops don't even sell AGP boards anymore around here, everything is focussed on PCI-Express nowadays.

I have just started using my 20" widescreen with 1680x1050 resolution. I must say a widescreen is very nice. I am glad that I went for a widescreen instead of a normal monitor.

[edit] try to search ebay. I found this one which will easily handle that resolution and it is cheap.

Whilst PCI cards are not as common as they once were, there are still a few out there, as a last resort. I guess I just "go for it" and hope there are not too many "big pixels". If the worst comes to the worst and I cannot find any alternative then a small investment it will have to be, but I would rather spend the money on some SD cards or something

Thanks for showing interest.

However, if your cards can only go to 1024x768, they are pretty old.

I will be in touch

I would like to change my standard 1024 X 768 monitor to a widescreen monitor, but the resolution on them seems to be 1680 X 1050.

My problem is this - I have four oldish PCs (residue of many years upgrading/rebuilding) which share the same monitor via a KVM switch.

The two oldest have graphics cards which max out at 1024 X 768, whilst the other two less old ones can exceed this by a good margin, but do not specifically support 1680 X 1050 resolution. The nearest supported resolution seems to be 1280 X 768. I have no wish (nor the finances) to embark on upgrading the existing computers other than minor mods.

Am I right in assuming that as long as the Video Card resolution is less than the monitor, then it will still work, giving me two PCs with widescreen effect, but two others with the existing standard format. If this is correct, I would get two cheap graphics cards (PCI version) to bring the oldest machines in line.

My questions are these -
Are there any cards which specifically support the 1680 X 1050 format and if so, which? Must be cheap PCI cards or it is not worth the expense

Do monitors come with their own drivers that get round this problem?

Otherwise, is my logic correct and what problems am I likely to have?

Any advise would be much appreciated.

Get two screens. They don't have to be side-by-side. You could mount one on the wall above the other, maybe.

If Only.... there comes a time when life is all about priorities

I guess life is not perfect (invites cryptic comment from George ) so even if I had two monitors I have no room to use them both - other than on the ceiling perhaps.

Obviously the software contains co-ordinates dictating where the image will appear so there must be a way if you are a PS programmer.

The tiled (standard?) view with the blue bar holds its position to some degree, but I usually load 5 or 10 images at a time and work through them which means the tiled view becomes a bit cluttered.

Nil desperandum, I don't suppose it is the end of the world.

Cheers

Hi
I am using Photoshop CS version and find the positioning of the various toolbars a little problematical. With the editing screen up, the image sits fairly and squarely in the centre of the screen so many of the tool boxes overlap

I have tried all ways to position these boxes to no avail. In fact apart from the "actions" box I try to avoid using them now which rather defeats the object.

There seem to be four possible solutions

Buy a separate monitor for all tools - great idea but expensive and anyway the real estate on the desk is severely limited already

Second, buy a wide screen monitor - not so expensive on desk space. but may not solve the problem

Third, downsize the image for editing - not very inspiring when I really want to get full screen or as big as possible anyway.

Fourth - find some way of repositioning the image so that it is off centre, thus leaving a wider margin for the various tool boxes. This seems to be the best solution

Do any of the genii out there know a way to reposition the image?

Cheers

Thanks for that - I am off to try my luck - regedit here I come .

The problem re SP2 was not that I do not have it but that my original XP disk is SP1 and the service pack SP2 is on an update disk. Theoretically I can slipstream the two together and make my own XP-SP2 install disc but I tried it once and it did not work.

Anyway, better to fix the existing setup than try and re-install everything again

Some time later (as they say in the movies )

The symptoms are exactly as described in the above article, but the registry is already updated - not surprising since I have SP2 in place. Anyway, I tried updating the registry again as described but the problem persists.

I have already gone part way down the road to re-installing and have a clone of a part installed system but I cannot face all the re-configuaration, drivers, software, network, internet, etc etc etc. Ugh

Perhaps I will just put up with it like I have for the past couple of years.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions

I know this is way off photography, but we have one or two computer experts on this site and I have a problem. It is related to viewing image folders so I could say that it is indirect photography.

When I installed XP (when I was a young lad!) I had the option to display folders as Icons, details etc. Somewhere along the way I have lost that option. All folders display the same way. I can change from Icons to Details without problem, but only across all folders.

I have tried all the settings related to folder view, including "save these settings", but to no avail.

I do not want to reinstall windows - that takes too long especially as I have to also install SP2, which is also the reason why I cannot use the normal repair facilities - I just get "different version" which it is, of course because it is SP1.

I suspect something in the registry has been corrupted, but I do not know what.

Any help would be appreciated

That, I think, is an argument favoured by many. Certainly it is for me but then I am more of an amatuerish amateur than a pro pro
