My two penn'orth on the BT/Virgin discussion.
I have been with Virgin ISP and calls for ages, but had a BT phone line. BT's customer service eventually got so bad that I transferred my phone line rental to Virgin which was chwaper than BT. A while later I was browsing a picture heavy site and it struck me the connection was quite quick so I checked it. I was getting up to 14mb/s. This is about three times as fast as when I had the BT line. A bit of digging revealed that BT had given me a basic ADSL connection, but the Virgin connection was ADSL2+.
When you say "the problem with Virgin..." it might not be Virgin at fault.
